Over the following decade many French architects and decorators were called upon to work on major international projects. French embassies and ocean liners were their Trojan horse. In 1925 things had to be modern. The development of aviation and the automobile demanded it and for the first time garages and aerodromes were being built in large numbers. Although Art Deco is often associated with luxury it also influenced the design of low-cost housing and garden cities while department stores and shops created their own home decoration lines to meet demand. 1944Best.-Nr. 0012152Paris France Havana Cuba. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1944. Ephemera. On offer is an original typed and signed letter addressed to Dr. José Agripino Barnet former President of the Republic of Cuba and President of the Comité France-Amérique in Havana. Signed by Philippe Grousset a Free French official in Havana the letter thanks Barnet for a publication commemorating the centenary of Anatole France and notes its transmission to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris. Grousset references activity on July 14 Bastille Day and the recent Liberation of Paris while invoking Anatole France and Louis Pasteur as dual symbols of Frances intellectual and scientific identity. Dated La Havane le 1er Novembre 1944 and issued on the letterhead of the Comité Français de la Libération Nationale Délégation de Cuba the correspondence reflects the deliberate use of cultural figures as instruments of diplomatic signaling in the immediate post-Liberation period. Historical ContextThe document captures an administrative and symbolic moment in the reconstitution of the French state following the Liberation of Paris August 1944. The original CFLN Free French letterhead includes a stamp of the Délégation de la République Française Cuba reflecting the transition in status from Free French authority to the restored French Republic. This visual and bureaucratic overlay is central to the documents significance recording on a single sheet the reassertion of French state authority abroad during the final phase of the Second World War. Addressed to a former Cuban head of state actively engaged in Franco-Cuban relations the letter operates at the intersection of wartime diplomacy exile governance and elite transatlantic networks. It is a concise and highly legible artifact of Free French activity in Latin America at the moment of transition back to sovereign authority. ConditionSingle sheet typed with original ink signature. Moderate handling wear including light creasing minor edge wear and even toning. The official purple over-stamp is bold and fully legible. A clean and well-preserved example of working diplomatic correspondence.; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown
