He became King in 1848. His wife was the daughter of Infanta Luisa Fernanda of Spain and Prince Antoine Duke of Montpensier 18241890 the youngest son of Louis-Philippe of France and Marie Amalie of the Two Sicilies. They had eight children. In 1873 anticipating a restoration of the monarchy by the largely monarchist National Assembly that had been elected following the fall of Napoleon III the Count of Paris withdrew his claims to the French throne in favour of the legitimist claimant Henri V best known as the Comte de Chambord. In fact he died childless so the Count of Paris was recognized by most monarchists as Philippe VII of France. Louis Philippe died at Sheen House in Surrey in 1894. 2007rif. 4594India ink drawings by Philippe Fraisse. 10 1/4" x 10 1/4". Text in French English and Greek. Full page drawings with descriptions on facing page. "Of Delos all that remains is a name and perhaps not even a name. How many know of her Every word of the oracle prophesized against her came true. She is now a dead land. And yet no island was richer more glorious more revered more lauded. Delos boasted poets throughout every period in Greek literature and across all the Greek lands. During Virgil's lifetime the subject of Delos was so all-pervasive no self-respecting author dared broach it." A few scratches and minor wear to front wrap. Crisp clean/unmarked. Philippe Fraisse an architect by training has taken part in archaeological excavations carried out by the French School at Athens on the island of Delos since 1976. During frequent research trips to Delos he makes numerous line drawings of the archaeological digs of which these are 20. NEAR FINE.
