Padre Mechitar (1676-1746), prete cattolico armeno di Sebaste, dopo la concessione data dal governo della Serenissima, giunse nel 1717 nell'isola, insieme alla comunita' da lui creata nel 1700 a Costantinopoli. Nell'isola di San Lazzaro i monaci Mechitaristi (dal nome del fondatore) costruirono un monastero e soprattutto diedero vita, con una tipografia e una biblioteca, alla rinascita della letteratura armena in lingua classica.
