The book is more than simply a new testament after Luther's version containing also an informative Psalter the Psalms of David a catechism song book and other material; old ink ownership note W.B Gould neatly written on the title page. Livre extrêmement fragile, traduit de l'anglais par J. Robert Vidal. Etat général magnifique. Rarissime édition originale. Exemplaire enrichi de la couverture découpée de l'édition publiée en Livre de Poche, avec photographie de Jeanne Moreau.Le Roman sera adapté au cinéma en 1962 par Stanley Baker avec dans les rôles principaux : Jeanne Moreau, Stanley Baker, Virna Lisi, James Villiers, etc. Une nouvelle adaptation réalisé par Benoît Jacquot, sortira en 2018, avec dans les rôles principaux : Isabelle Huppert, Gaspard Ulliel, Julia Roy, Richard Berry, Didier Flamand, Marc Barbé.

Green Morocco goatskin leather over boards five raised bands over gilt ruled borders with fleuron decals and 'TESTAMENT' title boards gilt and blind double-ruled with fleurons at corners of interior panel all edges gilt with gilt-tooled turn-ins. Rubbing to extremities small ding to front cover short tear to front hinge tail edge front hinge starting rear hinge just starting 1' from tail light bowing aside from a few short tears text is very clean and square. Original owner's signature 'Alexander Campbell' with line of succession added by one later hand. Campbell was a Methodist minister not the Church of Christ founder of Bethany VA. Very large print with incredibly bold and clear type. Great Primer = 18pt font = 6.350 mm. During the Civil War the American Bible Society distributed over 1 million Bibles for three consecutive years from 1863-65 a feat not replicated until 1918 John Fea The Bible Cause. Most of these Bibles were pocket-sized Testaments distributed to Soldiers most commonly the cheaply-produced pocket-sized Nonpareil 32mo. The ABS did however produce a much smaller number of "Fine Bibles" such as this one to help finance the cause of placing a bible in the hands of every American. Hills 1628 later printing. No. 86 at $4.25 in the price catalog of the ABS Annual Report Vol. 49 1865 OCLC lists only 1 copy each of the two 1857 ABS Great Primer printings and none of the 1865. 18658vo., on India paper, with 9 coloured engraved maps on 6 and a double-page chronological chart; attractively bound in publisher's black roan portfolio with drop sides all round, covers framed and blocked in blind and blocked and lettered in gilt, back with five raised bands ruled in blind, second compartment lettered in gilt 'Bagster's Teacher's Bible', gilt edges, black endpapers, portfolio mildly scuffed and rubbed at extremities else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean copy. Bagster's Teacher's Bible is a facsimile reprint, with larger types, of the English Version of Bagster's Polyglot Bible first published in 1817 and which made Bagster's name. It corresponds page for page, and line for line, with the two well-known Pocket Editions. The text is that of the Authorized Version, printed in double column with the references in a third central column in Bagster style. In addition to the Old and New Testaments, this edition contains Cruden's Concordance, Chronology, Tables of Weights & Measures, Tabular Harmony, Comparative View of Quotations, and a set of maps engraved and coloured expressly for this edition. A particular feature is the set of Four Thousand Short Scripture Question with Answers, designed expressly for the use of teachers. The Teacher's Bible is an edition uncommon at best, and scarce indeed in this condition with wholly unrestored portfolio in unusually sound state. See Darlow & Moule 1081.

With only the most trivial scuffs to the edges this is a FINE copy with tight sound binding no markings and blank dedication pages. Although it has regularly appeared in subsequent Korean printings with bonded leather this first edition in genuine calfskin leather and printed in the U.S. has become quite scarce in trade.
