1785ref. Dublin1785GILPIN John aka COWPER William -- Adaptation: The life of John Gilpin taken From divers Manuscripts in the Possession of the Family and now published for the first Time by their Permission for the Gratification of the Public Curiousity respecting so extraordinary a Character. Dublin: Printed for Messrs. Burnet White Burton H. Whitestone Byrne Cash M'Donnel and Marchbank 1785. 12mo viii 144pp complete but lacking front and rear blank free endleaves; early brown tree-calf scuffed outer hinges and corners worn. Rare first Irish edition of a little known entirely spurious and understandably comedic prose 'life' of the fictional draper from Cheapside John Gilpin star of William Cowper's ballad 'The diverting history of john gilpin'. Cowper's verse which follows Gilpin on an intended journey to the Bell Inn Edmondton during which he became separated from his family and was taken by an out of control horse to a town ten miles distant had first appeared anonymously in the Public Advertiser 1782. The poem's popularity was immortalised in a series of performances at Freemason's Hall by the acclaimed Shakespearean actor John Henderson 1747-1785 and well capitalised upon by the London ballad and print trade as well as by provincial stage-managers. This present attempt in thirteen chapters at telling the earlier and post ballad-journey life of the unfortunate Gilpin is perhaps unsurprisingly given the desire for popularity by association dedicated to Henderson. It includes a narrative re-telling of the abortive trip to the Bell as Chapter X 'How he intended to have dined at Edmondton and was carried Ten Miles beyond it' as well as reprinting the verse original 'as read repeatedly with the greatest applause by Mr. Henderson'. All editions of this fictional work first published by S. Bladon London 1785 and reprinted twice there in the same year are rare; ESTC locates only four copies of this first Irish edition in the British Isles BL Cambridge Dublin and NLI and just three elsewhere Princeton Rutgers and Nebraska-Lincoln. It was in fact the very first production in which they co-starred after joining the Theatre Guild's company in 1924 and was a key element in establishing their mastery of light comedy. They also headlined the 1931 film version of the play their only co-starring role in a movie; both were nominated for Academy Awards but lost out to Wallace Beery and Helen Hayes respectively. . 1922ref. 30610Hollywood Calif.: Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation. Near Fine. c.1922. First Edition. Hardcover. dark green buckram with gilt lettering; no dust jacket faint external wear along spine otherwise blemish-free. sepia-tone film stills A "photoplay edition" of sorts this small booklet approx. 75 unnumbered pages presents the story of the 1922 silent film epic ROBIN HOOD which starred Douglas Fairbanks and was produced by him for release through the then-young United Artists. It includes the cast and credits of the film and is illustrated with a generous selection of full-page scene stills. It appears to be a promotional or souvenir item which has been specially bound; after the conclusion of the story proper there are another ten pages or so devoted to background on the conception and production of the film the sort of thing that one might ordinarily find in a studio pressbook of the time. OCLC records several copies of what appears to be a shorter version of this same item published by Prospect Press in New York; at 64 unnumbered pages issued in pictorial wraps which have not been bound with the present version it would seem to be a version that presents the story only without the additional of the additional production-related information. The latter "production" section is also printed on a somewhat different quality paper suggesting that the two sections may have been "married" in this custom binding making this perhaps a unique example. Two notes: 1 "Elton Thomas" was a pseudonym for Douglas Fairbanks himself; and 2 this item comes from the collection of the esteemed film historian Rudy Behlmer 1926-2019 who among his many areas of expertise was known for his comprehensive knowledge of movies about Robin Hood. . Ford Warminster” dated 1747 and with a small but elaborate bookplate of William Thomas Smedley 1858-1920 the noted collector of Elizabethaniana and Bacon; his library was sold in 1924 to Henry Clay Folger and the Folger library collection today includes nearly 1500 volumes formerly owned by Smedley. First edition second issue/state called the “she” Bible because of the reading of Ruth III 15: “she went into the citie”. In addition because of the small hole in C6 Matthew 26:36 it is impossible to tell whether the word Judas or Jesus is printed. The King James version of the Holy Bible is arguably the most important book ever published in English. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than 5 years and was laboriously attended to by over 50 translators and researchers. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale Coverdale Geneva and Bishops’ Bibles it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. Underlying everything is an explanation that reveals the inner state of the spiritual life or the ways and effects of God in in souls for their purification enlightenment and union with Him. A theologian and orientalist Haug was expelled from Strasburg for holding an assembly of Philadelphians and other mystic Separatists. He fled to the castle of Casimir Graf von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berlenburg which had become a refuge for radical pietiests. Remaining there until his death Haug directed a Philadelphian organization that extended throughout western Germany. "He is said to have been a man of great piety and charming personality and was regarded by Count Casimer as a prophet of God" Schaff-Herzog. "The new spirit of mystical Pietism. was fully revealed in the Marburg Bible 1712. The interpretation of type and prophecy in this follows the federal theology of Cocceius that of Canticles and Revelation Madame Guyon. It was the forerunner of a larger work in the same spirit the Berleburg Bible of 1726-42. projected and prepared chiefly by Johann Heinrich Haug. The text is a revision of Luther's with comparison of the English and French versions; the commentary reflects the views of the Philadelphian communities and quotes the mystical books current among them especially Madame Guyon's but its teaching goes back beyond Dippel and Petersen to Jakob Böhme or even to Origen in some points. It lacks unity of belief and of treatment; it is the work not of a single mystic giving voice to his inner convictions but of a propagandist sect with radical tendencies. It is not without value however from different points of view; it edifies by its continual application of Scriptural works to the spiritual life and it prepares the way for historical criticism by an appendix containing apocrypha Old and New Testament pseudepigrapha and postapostolic writings." Schaff-Herzog. Christopher Sauer the agent for the sale of the Berlenburg Bible in the United States used the text as a model for the first German-American Bible 1743. Some consider it his greatest work and it is probably the most anthologized.
