1918Publishers cloth. 12mo. Pages. 19 cm. First Yiddish edition. Jean Christophe, translated from the French by K Fornberg. Book 1, Der beginen 2, Der frih-morgen - 3 Yugend 4, Der oyfshtand 5, Di bafrayung. Rollands most renowned work, by far, was Jean-Christophe, completed in 1912. The 10-volume novel is the original roman fleuve, a work that chronicles a sprawling history that gives an overall, often-critical view of society during its time. In 1915 the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Romain Rolland as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings. Partly because of his outspoken defense of human rights, especially the rights of minorities, Rolland had a mass following among European Jews. In fact, the Yiddish translation of Jean-Christophe . Was among the most popular Yiddish books ever-published and was the best-selling modern translation into Yiddish. (Yiddishkayt.org; Romain Rolland) Subjects: Yiddish literature - Translations from French. French literature - Translations into Yiddish. OCLC lists 17 copies worldwide. First volume in fine condition, remaining volumes with lightly soiled and aged cloth, volume four cloth quite soiled; all volumes internally very fresh and clean. Very good condition. (YID-16-16)

1923Publishers cloth. 8vo. X, 375 pages. 21 cm. First Yiddish edition of the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. Along with Di Etik, also published in 1923, this represents the very first appearance of any of Spinozas works in any Jewish language. Perhaps one of the most controversial texts of the early modern period, the TTP, in its critique of religion and of Jewish "chosenness", is possibly one of the most appropriate of Spinozas works to be translated into Yiddish for secular readers. Translated by N. Perlman, who also translated Jack London, Anatole France, Schopenhauer, and Thomas Paine into Yiddish. Subjects: Philosophy and religion. Free thought. Spinoza, Benedictus de, 1632-1677 - Translations into Yiddish. OCLC Number: 150623442.Spine darkened, touch of wear to foot and crown of spine. Very Good condition. (YID-16-15-E) Xxxx

Publisher's full red cloth spine in five compartments separated by raised bands and gilt borders gilt lettering in three compartments gilt tooling in remainder. Red silk marked bound in. Folio 376 x 251 mm. This is a full-size photographic facsimile of the First Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays which was printed over a period of two years and released in 1623. As printing of the First Filios proceeded proofs were read and corrections were made. The uncorrected sheets were not thrown out but were mixed in with the corrected ones with the result that no two First Folios of which there are 240 in existence are identical. This edition reproduces pages from 29 of the most satisfactory copies out of the 82 now in the Folger Shakespeare Library originally selected by Prof. Charlton Hinman in 1968. In his Introduction Peter W. M. Blayney reconsiders Professor Hinman's findings in the light of new Elizabethan scholarship. The volume includes all of the line numbering established in the 1968 edition as well as the traditional Globe act-scene-line numbers. Professor Blayney's Introduction includes a table identifying the order the pages of each play were set and the compositors believed to have set each page. This is a unique and invaluable tool for any serious Shakespeare scholar. The volume is in perfect pristine condition unmarked tight square and clean. The slipcase is also in perfect condition. 1990Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. 1 corner bumped. ; Professor Winnington-Ingram's reputation as an authority on Greek drama is based on a lifetime's careful scholarship. In 1980 the Press published Professor Winnington-Ingram's book on Sophocles and in 1983 he followed it up with some studies on Aeschylus. This book explores the problems in Aeschylus' earlier plays: Persae, Septem contra Thebas and the Daniad trilogy. There is also an emphasis on different aspects of the Oresteia and finally, an examination of the peculiar problems in Prometheus Bound. A view of Aeschylean tragedy emerges - and of the poet's contribution to the development of Greek religious thought. Students of Greek drama will welcome this collection. Greek in the body of the text is translated, so that the book will be accessible to those studying Greek literature in translation and the literature and drama of other cultures. ; Beiträge Zur Altertumskunde.
