Gilt tulip roll on the boards. Spine ornamented with gold crossed arrows. Joints tender. Printed ExLibris of John Rayner. Gaskell 47. Terence (Ca. 190-159 B.C.), the great Latin comic poet, was born in Carthage. He came to Rome as the slave of a senator, Terentius Lucanus. In the house of Lucanus he was educated like a free man and soon emancipated. His successful first play, 'Andria' introduced him to Roman society, and the circle of Scipio, Philus, and Laelius. His surviving six comedies are drawn from Athenian sources, especially from lost plays by Menander. Terence has been read for over two thousand years, and his influence on European literature cannot be overestimated. He imparted to Latin the sense of artistic elegance, consistency and moderation which made it a model for all literary epochs. In him we find a meeting-point for three great civilizations - the decaying Greece; Carthage, soon to pass away into oblivion; and nascent Italy, poised to absorb the world. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he be came printer to Cambridge University. All of his books bear show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo. "All these bear the marks of unabated genius even in his declining days: and suffice, had he printed nothing else, to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time" - T. B. Reed, in 'Old English Letter Foundries' "Quot homines tot sentensiae; suo quoiqu e mos " So many men, so many opinions; a law of his own to each -- Terence. ** PRICE JUST REDUCED!! W154

réf. 22903No place or date. Book published in New York by Macmillan in 1965. 9pp 8vo. Complete carbon typescript. On nine leaves stapled together. Title at head of first page: 'THE BOAT THAT MOOED.' Fry's signature in blue ink at top left of first page: 'Christopher Fry:'. Fry has cut down the story by deleting and removing a passage. The lower part of the leaf carrying the sixth page of the story has been cut away and the original seventh page has been removed hence the typescript pagination 1-6 8-10 has been amended in manuscript to 1-9. A lighthearted faux-naive story replete with symbolism. Begins: 'Tom Crunch lived on a boat. All round the boat was water. There was water to the right water to the left water in front and water behind. And also water underneath. Up above there was the sky. Tom Crunch lived with his Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack was fat and sleepy. All day long he sat and fished in the water. Sometimes he was awake and sometimes he was asleep. It was hard to tell which he was because he looked just the same when he was awake and when he was asleep. He kept his eyes shut all the time unless he was eating fish. Then he kept his eyes open because of the bones.' There does not appear to have been an English edition of the book which was published in New York by Macmillan in 1965 with pictures by Leonard Weisgard. No place or date. " (Franz H. An imaginary account of the trial of the future dramatist before Sir Thomas Lucy on a charge of deer-stealing. Various verses are found in Shakespeare's pocket and are read aloud by the magistrate's clerk. None are especially exciting, and Sir Thomas falls asleep. Walter Savage Landor (1775-1864), English poet and essayist, was educated at Oxford. After a quarrel with his father, Landor went to live in Wales, where he wrote the epic poem Gebir (1798). The middle and most productive years of his life were spent in Italy. There he wrote the greater portion of his voluminous prose work, Imaginary Conversations (1824-1853), consisting of nearly 150 dialogues between notables both ancient and modern. Landor's verse ranges from the epic to the epigrammatic, including many lyrics of great simplicity and intensity. SHAKESPEARE BOX 1.
