Roughly translated: The modest Franklin arms himself against the storm And goes to seek the lightning in its darkest lairs; He prescribes its path; and from the heart of the cloud Silently makes it descend and die at his feet. With that same hand that ended the war That in another hemisphere recalled defended And reasserted the rights of liberty He silences the master of the thunder He disarms the gods of sky and earth The inclemency of the skies the vengeance of kings. unknown
