1868réf. 023658Boston: Fields Osgood & Co. 1868. Book. Good. Hardcover. First American Edition. 4to. Entire Volume VI binding copy marbled front board detached but present rear board missing spine leather missing first and final few pages brittle and chipped NOT affecting the Verne piece a great candidate for the binder. This is the first appearance in English of parts of the author's first novel a few pages excerpted from the book of the same title that would be published by D. Appleton NY 1869 after having been published multiple times in France beginning in 1863. Verne who was relatively unknown in the English - speaking literary world was misidentified by the editors of the present piece as "M. Jules Berne." It is generally believed the editors thought this piece was non-fiction. From the editor's preface "I must begin by stating that I cannot guarantee the authenticity of the following remarkable adventures. I merely repeat them here confiding in the good faith of one M. Jules Berne. The Frenchmen who it is notorious are much better up in aeronautics than ourselves modestly leave the merit of the five weeks' balloon trip across Africa to the English." Very scarce and ready for restoration. Fields, Osgood, & Co. Hardcover

réf. 57453New York NY: E.P. Dutton and Company 1881 1880. French Literature FIRST FREWER EDITION. Octavo 19 x 15cm pp.2 viii; 262 4. With 49 engraved plates by Benett including a frontispiece. Publisher's light blue cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. Some heavy creasing and a couple of small tears to fly-leaf and first blank. Lightly toned throughout; a distinct tobacco scent. Heavy toning to spine and board margins. Very good. Something of a farce in which a wealthy Chinese man tries to have himself killed to trigger a life insurance policy after being informed that he has lost his fortune only to discover later that he has not lost everything. First translated into English in the US in 1879. Although this edition is made up from sheets printed in London with a title page dated 1881 it was actually published just before the London edition in October 1880 since Sampson Low had decided to save its own publication for the Christmas gift market in November. It is therefore neither the first edition in English nor the first UK edition but it is the first edition of this particular translation. New York, NY: E.P. Dutton and Company, 1881 [1880] unknown
