Stories included give a rarely heard perspective on the war and Luftwaffe members are frank in revealing the difficulties they encountered and what they believe led to their downfall. The Luftwaffe pilot and crew members featured in this unusual collection divulge what was once highly-confidential information including fighter tactics aircraft technology and operations how they received their commands and what the chain in carrying out their orders was. Also included are thirty rarely seen photographs and five maps and diagrams. Images feature things such as uniformed Luftwaffe officers close-up shots of fighter planes and the boundaries the planes were authorized to carry out their missions in. This unique volume was compiled by acclaimed military historian David C. Isby and is extraordinarily comprehensive. To make it Isby poured over accounts of the war given by members of the Luftwaffe shortly after the events they describe. ; FINE/FINE Greenhill Books ; Stackpole Books, London ; Mechanicsburg, Pa., c1998 hardcover

In it a small band of warriors and mystics raise their swords to save Europe from a bloodthirsty Mongol invasion. Inspired by their leader an elder of an order of warrior monks they embark on a perilous journey and uncover the history of hidden knowledge and conflict among powerful secret societies that had been shaping world events for millennia. But the saga reaches the modern world via a circuitous route. In the late 19th century Sir Richard F. Burton an expert on exotic languages and historical swordsmanship is approached by a mysterious group of English martial arts aficionados about translating a collection of long-lost manuscripts. Burton dies before his work is finished and his efforts were thought lost until recently rediscovered by a team of amateur archaeologists in the ruins of a mansion in Trieste Italy. From this collection of arcana the incredible tale of The Mongoliad was recreated. Full of high adventure unforgettable characters and unflinching battle scenes The Mongoliad ignites a dangerous quest where willpower and blades are tested and the scope of world-building is redefined.' -- publisher. 47North paperback

Antoine Galland 1646-1715 was a French orientalist and scholar best known for being the first European to translate the Kitab alf laylah wa-laylah Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night; known as the 'Arabian Nights' into French. His adaptation of the popular Arabic tales entitled Les Mille et Une Nuits was published in 12 volumes between 1704 and 1717 and it was this French edition that formed the basis of all the other European language translations including English throughout the 18th century. Galland was an accomplished linguist with a comprehensive understanding of Arabic Persian and Ottoman Turkish. He travelled widely and his trips included 5 year visit to Constantinople between 1670 and 1675 accompanying the French Ambassador and a further 10 years after this to Greece Egypt Palestine and especially Smyrna before returning to Constantinople. In 1679 he was appointed antiquary to Louis XIV and collected antiquities numismatics and manuscripts for the Bibliothèque Royale during his travels. The present text is an early publication by Galland and includes extracts from a wide variety of sources in Persian Arabic and Ottoman Turkish translated into French accompanied by his 'observations' on the various matters. These are presented as "Sayings" and form the first half of the text. The second half are the "Maxims" and these are a collection of proverbs and anecdotes which contain the earliest appearance of the Arabian Nights in translation. The first edition of this text was printed in French in 1694 and this English edition appears only one year later in 1695; decades earlier than any recorded English translations of Galland's Les Mille et Une Nuits and over a century earlier than any authentic English translation of the Arabian Nights directly from Arabic.
