2021About the Book;-A Writer Has arisen in our own country competent to elucidate most thoroughly the difficulties of this subject. The greatest Sanskrit Scholar of his time, whose name the university of Oxford is proud to associate with its own in the excellent grammar which he has given to the public has added to his high reputation by his graceful of the English language to the exposition of the native system of grammatical teaching. It may be said of all this author’s numerous work, that as they abound in indications of surpassing genius, so they offer to the student of oriental literature the most valuable information on every topic of enquiry. It is enough to say of the present volume that it is the first really elementary sanscrit grammar ever published before the year 1846. Monier Monier-Williams, KCIE (1819 – 1899) was the second Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, England. He studied, documented and taught Asian languages, especially Sanskrit, Persian and Hindustani. He was born in Bombay, the son of Colonel Monier Williams, surveyor-general in the Bombay Presidency. His surname was "Williams" until 1887, when he added his given name to his surname to create the hyphenated "Monier-Williams". In 1822, he was sent to England to be educated at private schools at Hove, Chelsea and Finchley. He taught Asian languages at the East India Company College from 1844 until 1858 when company rule in India ended after the 1857 rebellion. He came to national prominence during the 1860 election campaign for the Boden Chair of Sanskrit at Oxford University, in which he stood against Max Müller. About The Author : Sir Charles Wilkins(1749-1836) KH FRS was an English typographer and Orientalist, and founding member of The Asiatic Society. He is notable as the first translator of Bhagavad Gita into English, He supervised Panchanan Karmakar to create one of the first Bengali typeface. His translation of the Gita was itself soon translated into French (1787) and German (1802). It proved to be a major influence on Romantic literature and on European perception of Hindu philosophy. Henry Morley(1822-1894) was an English academic who was one of the earliest professors of English literature in Great Britain. Morley wrote a popular book containing biographies of famous English writers.
