A spectacular example of the large paper edition this Bible sometimes called the "Killer Bible" for its typographical error in Mark 7 verse 27: "Let the children be killed" rather than "filled." It was richly illustrated by James Fittler 1758-1835 an esteemed British engraver of portraits and landscapes who served as marine engraver to King George III. He produced illustrations for the Boydell Shakespeare and Dibdin's Aedes Althorpinae. In this edition Fittler based his engravings on Old Master paintings befitting the gravity of the text. The printer Thomas Bentley produced large editions for Thomas Macklin Rudolph Ackermann and Paul Colnaghi all publishers of plate books; he also printed several of the earliest books for the Roxburghe Club. ESTC lists three editions of the Bowyer and Fittler Bible: this one which ESTC describes as the large paper edition; the regular two-volume quarto edition also 1795; and a: two-volume twelvemo edition 1796 which was issued in parts. Octavo. 104pp. Owner stamp and signature of a noted American psychologist on the front fly and binding a trifle worn else fine in modestly rubbed near fine dust jacket. Brody was a longtime professor of psychiatry at Temple University. John N. Rosen is quoted on the jacket: "From my point of view Dr. Brody's work constitutes a turning point in the presentation of this subject. ." Although Rosen was respected in his time the story of his practice is a tragic one. Here is a lengthy quote from a review of Edward Dolinick's Madness on the Couch written by Joanne Sitarski and published in The Harvard Crimson: "John Rosen a psychiatrist from Philadelphia did not beat around the bush when he treated his patients. Looking into their eyes he told neurotic patients they were 'crazy' accused schizophrenics of 'lying' and threatened to 'kill' any patient who acted 'abnormal.' His methodology was drastic brutal and surprisingly well admired by his peers. He was awarded a faculty position at Temple University Medical School and the Man of the Year award from the American Academy of Psychotherapy. From the 1950s to the late 1970s Rosen was psychiatry's Superman; he soared to the peak of his profession with the claim that he could cure any psychosis. But like all superheroes Rosen too was make-believe. In 1983 he was forced to surrender his medical license. Rosen faced 67 violations of the Pennsylvania Medical Practices Act that ranged from curing schizophrenics who had never had schizophrenia to sequestering patients in dungeons and cells extending his definition of 'drastic' to a new level of inhumane." A vanity-published apologia for the work of a discredited psychologist known for his brutal tactics. Vantage Press hardcover books

1922rif. 11290New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1922. Second American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Second American Edition. Hardcover. Ouspensky was a Russian esotericist known for his expositions of the early work of the Greek-Armenian teacher of esoteric doctrine George Gurdjieff. He met Gurdjieff in Moscow in 1915 and was associated with the ideas and practices originating with Gurdjieff from then on. He taught ideas and methods based in the Gurdjieff system for 25 years in England. Gurdjieff proposed that there are three ways of self-development generally known in esoteric circles. These are the Way of the Fakir dealing exclusively with the physical body the Way of the Monk dealing with the emotions and the Way of the Yogi dealing with the mind. What is common about the three ways is that they demand complete seclusion from the world. According to Gurdjieff there is a Fourth Way which does not demand its followers to abandon the world. The work of self-development takes place right in the midst of ordinary life. Gurdjieff called his system a school of the Fourth Way where a person learns to work in harmony with his physical body emotions and mind. Ouspensky picked up this idea and continued his own school along this line. He made the term "Fourth Way" and its use central to his own teaching of the ideas of Gurdjieff. He greatly focused on Fourth Way schools and their existence throughout history. Revised edition with Gurdjieff and Ouspensky Centre postcard laid in. Provenance Contemporary ownership inscriptions "Deme Alesone Sandelandes" repeated on the New Testament title-page and verso of the double-page map in John 20. This Bible's first owner is likely Dame Alison Sandilands d. 1584 Lady Ormiston a member of the prominent Sandilands family of Calder and wife of John Cockburn of Ormiston one of the early supporters of the Scottish Reformation. The Ormiston household stood close to the circle of John Knox: Knox served as tutor to Alison's son Alexander Cockburn while the Protestant martyr George Wishart was sheltered at Ormiston shortly before his arrest in 1546. Alison herself participated in the circulation and preservation of Reformation writings and Henry Balnaves's Confession of Faith was dedicated to her when published in 1584. Later 17th-century family records to verso of The Order of the Yeres include births in 1672 and 1676 the ownership inscription of Mary Hill and a record of the death of her father Charles Hill on 22 October 1691." Note First edition of the Geneva Bible the most important and widely read English Bible for more than a century. Produced by English Protestant exiles who had fled Marian persecution for Geneva it was the first complete English Bible translated directly from the original biblical languages and the first English Bible printed in roman type and with verse divisions. Designed as a portable and readable Bible for everyday devotion and study its title page departed from the elaborate woodcut designs of earlier English Bibles such as the Coverdale Matthew's and Great Bibles instead featuring a modest image of the Israelites trapped at the Red Sea. Hemmed in by the sea mountains and the pursuing Egyptian army the Israelites turn to God for deliverance a scene that invites readers to see a parallel between Israel's bondage and the plight of the persecuted English church in exile awaiting God's deliverance and the opportunity to return home. The Geneva Bible quickly became the Bible of the English Protestant household and retained its popular preeminence until its gradual suppression and displacement following the introduction of the King James Version in 1611. Bound with the first edition of the newly translated metrical Psalter authorized by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland containing the enduring Scottish version of Psalm 23 beginning "The Lord's my shepherd I'll not want."
