Two large folio volumes in one 19 1/8 x 12 1/4 inches; 480 x 311 mm. Complete with 573 leaves. Text ends on leaf 13E1 and is followed by an Index and Tables a-e f1. List of subscribers bound in after title-page and dedication. Text in double columns. Beautifully bound in early 19th-century full diced tan calf. Overall a very good clean copy. Originally priced four guineas in sheets for subscribers "the edition consisted of 1250 copies of which 556 were remaindered in 1768 and bought by the London bookseller R. Baldwin at 36s. each.Baldwin was offering copies at three guineas in sheets in 1771" Gaskell. "One of the most beautifully printed books in the world" Dibdin. This edition "has always been regarded as Baskerville's magnum opus and is his most magnificent as well as his most characteristic specimen" T.B. Reed A History of the Old English Letter Foundries p. 279. Gaskell declared that the title-page to the New Testament is "a perfect page of fine printing." Although the Baskerville Bible is now recognized as one of the greatest Bibles of all time it was initially a financial failure. Costing £2000 to print the remaining stock about half of the edition was remaindered five years after publication to a London bookseller. It was Baskerville's last great book. "Aesthetically the highest point in English Bible printing so far was John Baskerville's folio printed at Cambridge in 1763. To achieve his ambition to print a folio Bible Baskerville had to become University Printer on not very advantageous terms. The Bible uses his types paper and ink and shows his characteristic 'machine-made' finish: very smooth and even in colour and impression with glossy black ink on smooth paper. The design is traditional but the quality of material and workmanship is so high and the conventions are so delicately modified and consistently applied that the result is extremely impressive" The Cambridge History of the Bible: The West from the Reformation to the Present Day p. 464. 1681rif. 1278921681. ENGLISH LAW. Proceedings Upon Impeachments from the year 1666 to the year 1681. Manuscript. No place circa 1681. Quarto modern full brown calf raised bands red morocco spine label. $3200.Original manuscript from the late 17th century with the parliamentary impeachment proceedings against 14 individuals during the reign of Charles II.The accountsÑwritten in legible script with an index at frontÑbegin with the proceedings against Viscount Mordaunt charged with raping the daughter of the surveyor of Windsor Castle when Mordaunt was the castle's constable. Although they include a number of cases including that of William Penn in 1668 the clear focus is on the Popish plot a supposed conspiracy promulgated in 1678 that led to the arrest and trial of five Catholic lordsÑBaron Arundell the Marquess of Powis Baron Belasyse Baron Petre and Viscount StaffordÑall of which are recounted in this manuscript. As anticatholic hysteria waned and it became increasingly clear that the ""plot"" was a fiction the fallout entrapped more of the players: the impeachment of William Scroggs who served as the Chief Justice during the trials is detailed as is that of the Lord High Treasurer the Earl of Danby who was charged with concealing the plot and Edward Fitzharris who had attempted to implicate Danby in Sir Edmondbury Godfrey's murder in 1678 an event which fanned the flames of anticatholic hysteria. 1812rif. ST19567-094Bungay: C. Brightly and Co. and T. Kinnersley 1812. Sixth Edition. 215 x 133 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4". viii xl 376 pp. Sympathetic light speckled half calf over marbled paper boards raised bands red and black morocco labels. With 54 hand-colored plates including frontispiece illustrating plants discussed in the text. A couple of ink corrections in a contemporary hand. Johnston 760. Variable foxing with perhaps a fourth of the text noticeably foxed but the plates almost entirely unaffected a few stains to the gutter from pressed flowers now absent other trivial defects but a perfectly readable copy with quite attractive plates in a pleasing virtually unworn retrospective binding. First published as "The Useful Family Herbal" in 1764 this popular work provides a description of British plants helpful for at-home remedies. The highlight of the volume is the well-drawn and richly colored plates which Nissen tells us were drawn by the important natural history illustrator Sydenham Edwards 1769-1819 whose work DNB describes as "among the best scientific illustrations of the day." Hill 1716-75 was a perplexingly self-destructive personality who nevertheless managed to produce useful books. He was a surgeon an unsuccessful actor and an apothecary who made considerable money selling quack medicines; he published several books including some botanical works of substantial value like the present one and a steady series of usually abusive periodicals; he was constantly scheming to make money and to raise his reputation above its rightful altitude; and he was always embroiled in controversies because of his ungovernable proclivity toward impertinence and derision as well as his overweening vanity. This last quality together with Hill's direct attacks on Garrick and his friends prompted the latter's memorable epigram reflecting the doctor/actor's reputation among his detractors: "For physic and farces his equal there scarce is:/ His farces are physic his physic a farce is." After publishing some not insignificant scientific writings including a supplement to Chambers' "Dictionary" Hill tried to obtain admission to the Royal Society but his unprincipled character blocked any hope of membership. Despite his reputation "The Family Herbal" offered here in its sixth edition was obviously viewed as serious and significant enough to be reprinted a half century and later after its first appearance. A little soiling to leather and a couple of trivial imperfections internally but a very fine copy inside and out. This pretty little prayer book is a lovely example of provincial English bookbinding and very typical of an era in which such luxurious volumes were popular gifts among the moneyed classes. The Russell firm is recorded by Ramsden as operating in Guildford in southern England and the ticket in the present book notes that they were also booksellers stationers printers cutlers and silversmiths in addition to binders. There were three deluxe copies marked as A B and C; There were 25 copies numbered 26 to 50 for the Catalan edition. This is a powerful and ever relevant history of the development and evolution of the concept and adoption of the tenets of freedom of the press. "The French Revolution led to modern democracy. Terms like left-wing and right-wing revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements freedom censorship and silencing intellectual discourse were introduced and remain relevant. The texts of Condorcet 1776 and Bonald 1826 allow us to comprehend the debate that occurred in those times. Historian Albert Corbeto provides a background for the facts and contrasts them recounting from a neutral standpoint the historical events that had a substantial impact on French and European society. There are many parallels between the past and present controversies. In today's geopolitically volatile world there is a renewed and disturbing discussion about the nature and limits of various liberties including freedom of the press. The French Revolution led to modern democracy. Terms like left-wing and right-wing revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements freedom censorship and silencing intellectual discourse were introduced and remain relevant." Stanford University Library Albert Corbeto is a professor of Typography and Book History in the Postgraduate degree on Advanced Typography and Typographic creation in Design Degree. He is in charge of publishing and other cultural activities at the Reial Academia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona and also cooperates with the Associació de Bibliòfils de Barcelona. He has published several articles and monographs on Spanish typography as well as on other aspects of printing and book history. The illustrator Elies Plana is a Barcelona based book artist and printer who has been working in the field for the last 15 years. After studying fine arts at the art school of Olot he joined the workshop of his father Miquel Plana. He learned the craft and the different techniques by helping and assisting his father in the production of over 100 fine books. He not only learned the love for the books but also for the craftsmanship involved in every stage of producing them. In 2008 he started his own projects that vary from editions book prints and special commissions. He works with different techniques from linocuts and woodcut to etching and uses lead and wood types to print the texts Bound with marbled paper boards with brownish orange spine and cover edges. In the original linen clamshell box backed with matching morocco. With 30 lithographs in the text by Gerhart Kraaz and one additional lithograph in a portfolio. ◆Slight discoloration from a bookmark in the lower gutter of colophon opening otherwise in perfect condition. Handsomely bound and beautifully designed and printed this very large folio first publication from the Ars Libri Press later called Ars Librorum exemplifies the kind of high quality work for which leading German publisher and book designer Gotthard de Beauclair was known. Beauclair 1907-92 began his career at Insel Verlag where he rose to art director and according to the Oxford Companion to the Book "turned inexpensive Insel books into collectors' items with excellent typography." He also founded three different publishing houses where he produced special limited editions that made full use of his excellent design and typographical skills. The present item is one such work recognized by the Association of German Book Artists as one of the most beautiful books of 1962. Gerhart Kraaz 1909-71 studied painting and worked as a graphic designer before becoming a serious book illustrator. The present title is considered his first major work in the realm of bibliophilic editions. His illustrations in charcoal are sensuous and shadowy capturing the romance and allure of the most beguiling Old Testament book. This edition in English appeared the same year as the German language edition but is much rarer--apparently the publisher cancelled a number of copies and very few ever made it to market. The binding characterized by an elegant simplicity is appropriate for the subject matter and for the stately large-format volume. Our binder Roland Meuter maintains an atelier in Ascona Switzerland where he continues to produce imaginatively designed bindings that attract considerable attention.
