1922rif. 11290New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1922. Second American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Second American Edition. Hardcover. Ouspensky was a Russian esotericist known for his expositions of the early work of the Greek-Armenian teacher of esoteric doctrine George Gurdjieff. He met Gurdjieff in Moscow in 1915 and was associated with the ideas and practices originating with Gurdjieff from then on. He taught ideas and methods based in the Gurdjieff system for 25 years in England. Gurdjieff proposed that there are three ways of self-development generally known in esoteric circles. These are the Way of the Fakir dealing exclusively with the physical body the Way of the Monk dealing with the emotions and the Way of the Yogi dealing with the mind. What is common about the three ways is that they demand complete seclusion from the world. According to Gurdjieff there is a Fourth Way which does not demand its followers to abandon the world. The work of self-development takes place right in the midst of ordinary life. Gurdjieff called his system a school of the Fourth Way where a person learns to work in harmony with his physical body emotions and mind. Ouspensky picked up this idea and continued his own school along this line. He made the term "Fourth Way" and its use central to his own teaching of the ideas of Gurdjieff. He greatly focused on Fourth Way schools and their existence throughout history. Revised edition with Gurdjieff and Ouspensky Centre postcard laid in. 1710rif. 9200United Kingdom various 1710. Second Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. Second Printing. Hardcover. A collection of poetry tracts in the 18th century assembled and bound as a set showcasing typical and popular poetry writing and style in England. This was a common practice to gather political satire and literary tracts and bind them together generally at the discretion of the owner or in some cases the printer and/or bookseller. The majority of these works are poetry written as political satire towards the Tory government. This method of binding separate works 'sammelband' also speaks to contemporary collecting and publishing practices. The bound volume lists separate works as follows: attrib. Ward Edward. "The Pleasure of a Single Life or the Miseries of Matrimony. Occasionally Writ upon the many Divorces Lately Granted by Parliment. With the Choice or the Pleasures of a Country-Life." London: Printed and Sold by H. Hills in Black-fryars near the Water-fide 1709. Wilmot John. Earl of Rochester John Freke. "The History of Insipids a Lampoon By the Lord Roch---r. To Which is Added the Picture in Imitation of Annacreon's Bathillus. Also also the Coquet Beauty by the Right Honorable the Marquis of Normanby." London: Printed and Sold by H. rif. 20604St. Petersburg: Dmitry Sayenko; Nikodim 2018. Limited edition. Hardcover. Fine. Two volumes folio. Slipcased. One of 20 copies signed by Owens and Sayenko in the colophon. Prospectus laid in. The volumes are in fine as new condition; the slipcase has a tiny bump on one corner else is fine. The main volume 56pp hardcover is in full grey linen with a linocut paste-on and brass corners. Tan endpapers. All pages of handmade paper and uncut replete with linocuts taken directly from the blocks and in multiple colors with the text letterpress deeply printed on dampened paper with Baskerville type. Volume 2 is also folio and in handmade paper wraps the upper wrap with a linocut of Gawain and Ragnell taken from the block and title by letterpress in red. 28pp. The text is printed offset on ivory machine-made paper and contains the complete Romance as transcribed from the sole manuscript by Frederick Madden and rendered into modern English by James J. Owens keeping the original cadence and rhyme schemes. The artist explains the first volume: loose pages in an attic from an old book some chewed by rats. The owner realizing they are from the same book puts them together as best he can even though some of the pages are artfully torn by the artist to imitate the effects of rats gnawing through paper. This is the story of Gawain and the Loathly Lady Dame Ragnell. For Arthur's sake and safety Gawain wed her and when he did exactly the right thing the spell was broken she shed her ugliness and became beautiful. The sovereignty of women was the key. Dmitry Sayenko is a Ukrainian-born printmaker and book artist. His works are in private collections and in special collections in many countries. For this bit of artistry he cut over 50 blocks made the paper printed it with text and illustrations while damp and bound the books. The deep impression of the illustrations and the text on the handmade paper are superbly satisfying. His renderings of a morose Arthur a gallant Gawain a Lady with ugliness to spare and finally the beauty in the ending: these are a perfect match for the text. . 1922rif. 204721922. Full Limp Red Calf. Slipcase -- marbled paper pastedown on all sides other than opening. Chemise or inner folder -- thick glossy card stock all sides other than that has red calf with title label. Emily Swinton. Magnificent illuminated manuscript version of the Rubaiyat or some verses from the Rubaiyat. The illuminated borders are singular -- their design is unlike that we are familiar with and not even vaguely similar to anything we have ever seen produced by a latter-day illuminator professional or amateur. Their tracery is of blues greens reds some yellow in a few instances and not least the all important gilt. The illuminator surely was paying homage to some Islamic and Persian illumination in her palette but overall these sources are but influences; the illuminations are far from merely imitative. The design pulls you in and as one gazes longer one will discover small figurative imagery woven into the lines and swirls of the larger ornamentation. Words are beyond us to come close to capturing their complexity and character -- our photos hopefully will impart something of that. Let us just say the colors are deep and bold. Within these extraordinary borders is the calligraphic text rendered in a stunning easily legible Gothic Fraktur script. And there are four dream-like miniature watercolors as well of scenic Persian villages. N.d. circa early 1920s. 4to. 28.5 by 19 cm. Unpaginated 14 leaves with illumination -- illumination on one side. The back side of the leaf then left blank. Tissue guards for each page with illumination. The first leaf has no text -- it is a rectangular abstract design suggestive perhaps of a spectacular rug and inspired by such illuminated painting as one finds in many an antiquarian Koran. The next leaf is the title page with the words appearing to float on the page. The lettering has a distinctive verticality and the gilt letters are both clearly the letters they are supposed to be but have an abstraction that one can imagine they are Arabic script as well. The last two leaves with a more restrained formalistic illumination has evenly spaced dome-shaped pointers as one finds in Koranic decoration to highlight important passages. The binding slipcase and chemise are functional but don't really do the contents justice. Other than some crease marks on the calf and light wear overall to these protective features the binding and slipcase present no issues. unknown books
