1796réf. LIST0119Madrid: Imprenta Real 1796. First Edition. Good. The first bilingual edition of Pinckney’s Treaty of San Lorenzo which ended the West Florida Conflict by establishing an amicable agreement between Spain and the United States for the navigation of the Mississippi River. Thomas Pinckney signed as a representative of the United States and Manuel de Godoy signed in the name of Carlos IV of Spain. The agreement’s effects were far reaching as the ceded land that became the Mississippi Territory - particularly the Natchez region - formed a gateway for the United States expansion into the Southwest by destabilizing Spanish power. 1830réf. 68976New York. 1830. Colonial Texas Stock Certificate with Shares for One of Its Founders A handsome and highly significant Texas stock certificate of the colonial era with a detailed map of Austin's colony. This copy is made out in manuscript to Lorenzo de Zavala and signed by him on the verso. Zavala's grant from the Mexican government comprised much of the company's land holdings and after moving unwillingly to Texas in 1835 after butting heads with Santa Anna he became one of the chief figures in the Texan independence movement as well as the first Vice President of Texas. This document technically serves as a scrip allowing settlement and the future surveying of a plot in this case one labor or about 177 acres rather than actual title to lands in Texas although of course Zavala had no need to worry about that distinction. Other copies are known granting the holder a scrip for a much larger sitio or about 4388 acres. "The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company was founded in New York on October 16 1830 for the purpose of colonizing the lands assigned to the empresarios Joseph Vehlein David G. Burnet and Lorenzo de Zavala. The colonization contracts covered an area in East Texas lying east of the San Jacinto River and south of a line running twenty leagues north of Nacogdoches 3743163 acres. The company a real-estate promotion firm with agents land counselors surveyors and salesmen did not own land itself but sold scrip that allowed the settlers simply to move into the area allotted to the three empresarios. There the settlers had to complete all requirements of the Mexican colonization law before they could obtain title to land" - Texas State Handbook Online. "This certificate lists by date the four grants there were two grants to Vehlein to the three empresarios and gives the boundaries of the resulting tract. At the end is a provision that the location of the land is to be under supervision of the agent 'residing on the land' of the Trustees who on surrender of the scrip reports to the Commissioner appointed by the Government who issues titles 'Subject to the payments required by the Laws of the State'" - Streeter. Old mounting tape at head not impacting text light soiling lower edge worn. Very good. STREETER TEXAS 1117. STREETER SALE 304. unknown
