1887réf. 61511London: Henry G. Bohn. Good. Later issue. Hardcover. Bohn’s Scientific Library; 19 cm; 1013 pages; 19 cm. Two volumes xvi 471 and viii 518 pp. With 24 pages of publisher's advertisements dated 1887 at the rear of each volume. Title pages with the original Henry G. Bohn imprint dated 1854 but the dated advertisements show this set was issued in 1887 or later. Bohn titles were reissued with unchanged title pages for decades and the publisher's catalogues at the rear are the only reliable evidence of date. Provenance: Volume I inscribed at the head of the title page to Coleman Sellers 1827-1907 the Philadelphia engineer whose Kinematoscope of 1861 was an early motion-picture device from his son Horace Christmas 1889. The text is that of the first English edition translated by William Howitt from Ennemoser's "Geschichte der Magie" of 1844 with an appendix of the most remarkable and best authenticated stories of apparitions dreams second sight somnambulism predictions divination witchcraft vampires fairies table-turning and spirit-rapping selected by Mary Howitt. Ennemoser 1787-1854 was a Tyrolean physician and a leading advocate of animal magnetism and his history reads the whole of magic through mesmerism and somnambulism. The set evidently descended to Horace's son Charles Coleman Sellers 1903-1980 biographer of Charles Willson Peale and librarian of Dickinson College and penciled accession notes record its gift to the Dickinson Library in 1959 in memory of his wife Helen Earle Gilbert Sellers 1903-1951. Uniformly bound in the usual Bohn red cloth sides with elaborate blind-stamped borders and panels spines lettered in gilt. Cloth lightly toned at the spines with shallow fraying and chipping at the crowns. Bindings sound and contents clean. Ex-library with slim painted call numbers to the spines donation bookplates to the front pastedowns and Dickinson Library blind stamps to the title pages. A good set ex-library. . Mr. Wegner has been Curator of Ship Models at the David Taylor Model Basin Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Maryland since 1980. He began his study of designer's hull models at the Smithsonian Institution in 1968 and is a member of the American Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers the U.S. Naval Institute and the Organization of American Historians. The purpose of this study has been to utilize an interdisciplinary team to examine new evidence in order to determine the identity of the present Constellation: was it built in 1797 or 1855 Recognizing the controversy as one of the most emotionally-charged debates in recent American maritime history the team would not have exacerbated this subject had they not discovered fresh and important historical artifactual and technological evidence. Is the Constellation the oldest warship afloat in the world Or is it the last sail-only warship designed by the Navy. Responsible stewshardship for the irreplaceable ship afloat in Baltimore demands that there be a full understanding of its history. The study concludes that the frigate Constellation was built in 1796-97 and torn apart in 1853. In 1853-1855 a new sloop-of-war Constellation was designed and built and is the one preserved and displayed today. n.p. [Presumed to by U. S.
