Pascal's Pensées is one of the great theological works in history a seminal example of Christian apologetics and a classic of French literature. Writing amid the explosion of Cartesian rationalism Pascal emphasizes an intuitionist-style approach to religion while at the same time outlining one of the best-known rational arguments for religious belief - the wager. Writing early in the book Pascal observes that regardless of one's actual beliefs the very notion of God requires one to take a loaded gamble on his existence: "ouy; mais il faut parier" p. 56. At his death in 1662 Pascal left behind bundles of fragmentary notes for an inchoate book of Christian apologetics. The proper order of these notes has been debated for centuries but this edition contains the arrangement devised by his executors and particularly his sister Gilberte who had previously published a biography of her illustrious brother. A "pré-originale" printing of this first edition with a title page dated 1669 is known in two surviving copies and was an advance issue likely for circulation to Pascal's associates and to gain approbations. Very Good. Guillaume Desprez unknown books

Light blue / color pictorial wraps xiii 682pp 171 BW plates. Text is in French. This is Volume 3 in "The Workshop: Art History and Museum Studies" series. The national representations the artistic identities and the international cultural exchanges are at the heart of this book. On the occasion of each of the five universal exhibitions organized in Paris in the second half of the 19th century 1855 1867 1878 1889 and 1900 the author envisaged France and Switzerland in their respective position of nation inviting and nation invited. A minor state on the chessboard and cultural policy in Europe at that time Switzerland represents a case mark of allegiance to the regard of the scene and of parisian artistic institutions. The Swiss holdings highlight the issues which then concerned all the European countries: the enlistment of the arts in the service of national identities investment in culture of countries the competition of political models the power relationships between center and periphery the booming of private market for the art or even the affirmation of artistic modernity. Thanks to the broad perspective that it has adopted for its subject the author proposes an inspiring model for the study still in its infancy today of the national participations in international cultural events. Full leather binding with gilt lettering & decoration to spine gilt ruled borders on both boards all edges gilt marbled endpapers engraved frontispiece and title page 6-1/4" x 4” 434 pp. Aucher’s name appears in three different versions on the first leaf: Armenian transliterated Armenian and Latin dated 1847. George Gordon Lord Byron traveled to the Island of St. Lazar where Father Pascal Aucher 1774-1854 taught him Armenian. Together they published Grammar of the English and Armenian Languages in 1819 and contributed to Aucher’s 1821 English Armenian Dictionary. Byron was devoted to the Armenian language writing: “I learned the language of the Armenians in order to understand how and what language the Gods spoke for the Armenian language is the language of the Gods and Armenia is the homeland of the Gods and the Gods come from the Ararat valley.”A translation of twenty-four prayers one for each hour of the day of St. Nerses the Graceful translated into twenty-four languages. This is the culmination of an effort that first had 6 10 14 and then 16 translations. This effort was likely from many of the Mekhitarist monks at San Lazzaro degli Armeni. The monastery was founded in 1715 by twelve monks; when Byron visited there were 70; today there are 12 monks and five novices. Despite the small population St. Lazzaro has been a major center of Armenian studies for centuries and still maintains the third-largest library of Armenian materials in the world. This polyglot prayer book is notable not just for its place in Armenian history and the spread of Orthodoxy but it is also a typographic success in acquiring the various fonts. In Insula S.
