With Prolegomena and with Annotations Select Translated and Original by Charles P. Krauth D.D. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co. 1874. First American edition of the book which shook the intellectual world with its theory of immaterialism. Previous owner's ink name on front and back pastedown. Some minor rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners. Otherwise about fine. "The principle which underlay all Berkeley's philosophical writing was based on a rejection of all speculation such as Locke's about the meaning and necessity of matter as a primal necessity to any theory of human understanding. Briefly Berkeley maintained that no existence is conceivable or possible which is not conscious spirit or the ideas of which such a spirit is conscious. This presupposes complete equation of subject and object: no object can exist without a Mind to conceive it. Without the pre-existence of the Mind mater and substance cause and effect can have no meaning. In the Principles externality absolutely independent of all mind is shown to be an unreal impossible conception: true substance is the conscious spirit and true causality the free action of such a spirit. Physical substance and causes are relations among phenomena arbitrary though by the action of the Mind constant. Connexions between them are viewed subjectively as the suggestion or associations of the human mind and objectively as the operation of the Universal Mind. Thus the universe is the sum of human experience and forms a symbol of the divine universal intelligence: esse est percipi" Printing and the Mind of Man. Norman Library 196. PMM 176. Period brown cloth album fastened with a string; gilt-tooled generic title “Photographs” on the front cover. Edges worn mild silvering of the photos but overall a very good album with strong interesting photos. Interesting collection of 227 lively original photos of California likely taken by a local male resident during leisure outings with family and friends including early views of San Francisco San Bruno Santa Cruz and Dixon. About forty identified photographs show California landmarks with ca. ten rare images of Fort Bragg a former lumber hub in Mendocino County. Fort Bragg established in 1857 as a military garrison was soon transformed into a logging town with the support of the Union Lumber Company est. in 1891. In its prime Fort Bragg was a business center and the primary supplier of lumber for San Francisco’s post-1906 earthquake reconstruction. By the 1960s as accessible timber dwindled the town gradually shifted toward tourism. The early well-executed views of Fort Bragg show the Union Lumber Company’s lumber mill logging operations water tower log ponds and a nearby lake. The other photos from the “landmark” series document the now-demolished Newton J. Tharp Commercial School 1908–1952 in San Francisco the Tanforan Racetrack 1899–1964 in San Bruno the Sather Tower built in 1914 at the University of California Berkeley the Second Grammar School in Dixon built in 1911 demolished in 1958 and California’s oldest surviving amusement park the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk established in 1907. The album also contains lively images of significant historical moments in California including the 1908 explosion at the Standard Oil Company in Riverside one of the first airplane flights in Northern California and one of the state’s earliest automobile races at Tanforan Park in 1910. The other interesting photos include private photographs of the travelers posing by cars picnicking fishing horseback riding images of Silver Lake with cottages and camps topographers at work with alidade and plane tables steam trains railway tracks tunnels rugby matches at Stanford and a graduation ceremony at Stockton High School. 1750rif. 175832London: for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper 1750. Presented to and initialled by the Enlightenment thinker George Berkeley First edition presentation copy to the idealist philosopher George Berkeley inscribed by the Countess of Burlington on the initial binder's blank "To the Bishop of Cloyne from his most humble servant D. Burlington" and with Berkeley's ownership initials George Cloyne to the title page. Dorothy Countess of Burlington 1699-1758 was the granddaughter of Halifax a leading statesman of Charles II's time. She owned several manuscripts from Halifax which were edited here for publication by Alexander Pope. She was one of Queen Caroline's Ladies of the Bedchamber a patron of artists including David Garrick and Handel and a portrait painter. Berkeley was first introduced to her husband by Alexander Pope and he became close friends with them. Berkeley wrote to the Countess to thank her for the volume: "Madam Permit me to thank your Ladyship for a present very valuable in it self and much more so on account of the giver who is so good as to remember an humble servant in this remote corner; where to my sorrow I am haunted with a taste for good company and fine arts that I got at Burlington house the worst preparative in the world for a retreat at Cloyne" 2 April 1750. The volume came into the possession of the bookseller and bibliographer John Stephens 1948-2006 and has his bookplate. Stephens identified the letter and sourced a photocopy from Chatsworth House which had the original the photocopy is included as is a letter from Chatsworth sending it. He published an article on the volume and its presentation "Berkeley and Lady Burlington: A Footnote" in Berkeley Newsletter Number 12 1992 pp. 16-17. He quoted the letter and commented: "It is a rather sad letter: he may then have been depressed but worse was to happen. In February 1751 his son William died and the following October his friend Thomas Prior followed. The next year he sailed for England never to return to Ireland. Berkeley shared Burlington's interest in architecture but he had certainly not been in Burlington House since he had last been in London in 1734. It has very much the tone of someone pleasantly surprised that he should be remembered after so long an absence". Octavo 199 x 120 mm pp. 8 183 1. Contemporary mottled calf rebacked with black morocco label later double gilt rule to covers marbled endpapers red speckled edges. Bookplate to front pastedown of British modernist architect Marshall Sisson 1897-1978 alongside his pencilled signature and notes on the book on the front free endpaper verso. 1893rif. 174802New York: Printed at the De Vinne Press for the Committee 1893. The flowering of American Arts and Crafts sensibilities First Updike edition deluxe limited issue one of 500 large copies on handmade paper. Planned by the distinguished printer Daniel Berkeley Updike 1860-1941 this issue features pages framed with garlands of various plants each appropriate to the text it adorns. The deluxe binding is similarly gilt with thistles and Tudor roses alluding to the British origins of the Episcopal church. Updike's rationale for the decoration is elucidated in the loosely inserted pamphlet which accompanies this copy. While his initial intention was to emulate medieval devotional volumes he was limited by the typography common to the entire first edition which would not allow for the introduction of ornate initials. Since the borders could not be illuminated it was decided that the simple monochrome patterns must be elevated by the use of symbolism. This would be botanical befitting the style of the Middle Ages. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue an architect who often lent his skills to publishing created the designs for the binding and the borders. Although Updike's Merrymount Press was also founded in 1893 they were not prepared for the printing of The Book of Common Prayer and the presswork went to Theodore Low De Vinne 1828-1914 one of the founders of the Grolier Club. While Updike subsequently moved away from Kelmscott-inspired printing this early project is part of his cultivation of Arts and Crafts book production in late 19th-century America. Folio. Elaborate foliate borders throughout text printed in red and black. Original vellum spine and front cover lettered in gilt Gothic script and elaborately decorated with gilt foliate design with Tudor roses and Scottish thistle cornerpieces twin metal clasps endpapers patterned with gilt rose and thistle design top edge gilt fore and bottom edges uncut white bookmarker. Near-contemporary bookplate recording the volume as part of J. William Smith's bequest to Syracuse Public Library. Gilt bright vellum a little soiled small puncture to foot of front board a couple of minor bumps to extremities contents clean. A very good copy. Griffiths 1893/7. hardcover
