Paris: Chez Lois Billaine 1671. 12mo contemporary full dark brown speckled calf elaborately gilt-decorated spine covers with the arms of the House of Bourbon-PenthiÂvre raised bands red morocco spine label. $2200.First edition of this novel preceded by a dedicatory letter to the Duchess of Nemours this copy finely bound in contemporary calf-gilt with the arms of Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon Duke of PenthiÂvre son of the Count of Toulouse Grand Admiral of France and a renowned book collector.Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon was the son of Louis Alexandre de Bourbon and his wife Marie Victoire de Noailles; he was also a grandson of Louis XIV of France and his mistress Madame de Montespan. In 1733 at the age of six he was made a field marshal and the next year a lieutenant general. In 1740 he received the Order of the Toison dÕOr from the king and in 1742 the Order of the Holy Spirit. He served in the military under his maternal uncle the Duke of Noailles and fought brilliantly at Dettingen in 1743 and Fontenoy in 1745. PenthiÂvre was one of the wealthiest men of his day and probably the richest in France. He was known to be very charitable. Bibliographers variously attribute authorship of Le Comte de Dunois to Mme. Desjardins Mme. de Villedieu Comtesse Henriette de Murat or to Pierre dÕOrtigue de VaumoriÂre. Its strongest feature is the extensive surviving suite of 26 separate engraved leaves many carrying two subjects including maps topographical views historical scenes and natural-history curiosities. The 1700 Theatrum Mundi is closely connected with the remarkable group of Augsburg publications issued in 1693 under the unresolved pseudonyms Philo Chronographus and Philo Cosmographus. Material within the present copy itself retains the date 1693 while numerous engraved subjects correspond with the earlier Arca Temporum Reserata Trinum Marinum and Arca Temporum Mundi Reserata. The precise 1700 edition is independently recorded in the THEATRA repertory and survives in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.CONDITION COLLATION & COPY NOTESAn attractive and highly individual surviving copy in old quarter vellum over patterned paper-covered boards. 1950ref. 67276Created in Canada: Various 1950. Leather and cloth over boards. Labels range from fair to very good. Hardcover 1/4 leather purple over cloth grey over boards. A collector's album with 31 numbered cardstock leaves originally meant to collect greetings cards from the "Imperial City" series but instead has been repurposed to hold 873 separate labels from predominately Canadian companies. Dates range roughly between the 1920s-1950s with a few earlier and later outliers. The labels cover a wide range of products but the majority come from alcohol and beverages candy spices and food and household sundries. Most of the labels are glued into the album with a few stapled in. The glue has held for the most part with a couple labels starting to come loose. The last five pages contain several excised pages from an unknown source depicting Canadian military regiments. General condition of the labels runs from fair to very good; these labels were cut out assembled and displayed with care. There has been some bleed through from the glue on some of the leaves. The album itself is in fair condition - the cardstock pages are bound tight but the boards are considerably worn. . Various unknown
