ref. 19834An attractive amateur watercolor of a British gunboat from the War of 1812 the painting probably contemporary with the ship depicted. The visible part of the painting measures 19 by 27 cm. With the burlwood frame and off-white matting the wall hanging is 43 by 51.5 cm. The gunboat has a dozen guns on the starboard side which is shown. Two British flags are unfurled one on top of the foremast and one by the stern. In the distance are the outline or silhouette of five other ships. Below the painted part of the paper is written in faint pencil "Begun Wednesday 18 April Finished Thursday 19 April". Unfortunately no year is given. The paper onto which the watercolor was done is dampstained in the margins with the stains spread onto the painted portion but there not too conspicuous. Light staining besides visible in the margins. The frame and matting are modern and without issue -- they are pristine. unknown books
1976ref. 007523Self-Published Da Autore 1976. Softcover. Very Good. 8vo. 19 by 13 cm. 220 3 pp. Leaves heavily age toned or brown as dictated by the pulp high acidic paper used. ref. 005298Full Vellum. Very Good. N.d. but late 18th century after the publication of the original work in 1760 published in Venezia by Remondi. Large 8vo 25 by 20 cm. 25 pen and ink pages of illustration. These begin with the elaborate pen and ink Baroque title page with architectural decoration followed by page showing drawings of hands a second title with what we presume the one more fully original work by the copyist of seraphs holding up drapery with the title and a woman painter working before an easel and other illustrative decoration a broken sculpted head on the ground etc. Then 23 pages of pen and ink nude male studies the figures very Michelangelo-esque in the musculature and their overall sculptural quality. We would speculate that this copyist was in fact a woman based on the second title illustration. This particular illustration is delightful if the human figure itself doesn't have quite the polished execution of the copied material. Inked title on the vellum spine. The vellum is quite soiled. Otherwise the paper within is of high quality and clean. unknown books
ref. 005171Cloth. Very Good. Imaginative whimsical verse and illustrations of an upper crust rabbit Pollux and his frivolous cares and activities. N.d. early 20th century and World War One era. Oblong 4to 24.5 by 30 cm. 21 pp. and leaves of original pen and ink and watercolored drawings. Each page has a mounted illustration with inked verse next to it poking fun at Pollux's dress his vanity his helplessness his manners etc. Other characters include Jenkins card players a pining woman all of whom are rabbits. While we do not know the identity of the cartoonist the level of work is plausibly professional with details rendered meticulously. The various verses and illustrations are somewhat loosely linked -- there isn't so much a continuous narrative as much as an overarching archness. The artist and versifier is shooting arrows at the idle nobility. Also included are 10 additional cartoons on separate sheets only one of which involves Pollux and only two with colored watercolors. These additional cartoons including the one with Pollux relate to the First World War. From these and the album proper we can infer that the artist was of a more left leaning sensibility. unknown books
ref. 004614Quarter Calf. Wood Boards. Very Good. Could this be an unabashed gay celebration from the Thirties Here with a single exception only men are presented and in two images with a suggestion of intimacy and elsewhere with a constructivist-style muscularity that somehow also brings to mind Tom of Finland the pioneer in depicting hyper-masculine muscle men among them sailors and dock worker-types the specific subject matter of this unpublished unfinished manuscript. And the one exception with a woman in the illustration depicts what could be depicted as dissention between the muscular man and the diminutive girlfriend. N.d. circa 1930. Folio. 33 by 24 cm. 4 9-35 pp. The songs represented here include "Whiskey for My Johnny" "Paddy Doyle" "Across Western Ocean" "Poor Old Joe" "One Day More" "Banks of the Sacramento" "Blow the Man Down" "Captain Kidd" "It's Time for us to Leave Her Johnny" and a few songs without the title written in. Even with the gaps in illustration title or text the work delivers a strong punch and there is absolutely nothing tentative or sketchy about what is present. This was done by someone with a clear vision and testament to that is that the leaves are a Normandy Vellum France paper which is both a heavy and luxuriant stock. The paper was in common use between 1915 to 1925 anchoring our dating. However we believe the aesthetic is late twenties to early thirties. Also included are two separate sheets with three pages of pencil sketches with some red watercolor employed in one of the drawings for the artwork presumably that did not get entered into the book. unknown books
1919ref. 0032531919. Cloth. Very Good. Patriotic World War One poem "The Man who Keeps his Head" illuminated with exquisite vignettes. Oblong 24.5 by 31 cm. With eight plates including title page plus painted vignette on final leaf. These vignette watercolors four to eight per page depict the diversity of British experience whether its variety of industry its trades its modes of farming its ships etc. The effect is panoramic and epic a visual equivalent to Noel Coward's sweep in "Cavalcade" say. Framing it all are Art Nouveau devices and ornament very much true to the period. The book was easily of publishable quality and its creation demonstrates that a strain of patriotism and optimism somehow withstood the bitterness and cynicism engendered by the war. Tissue guards with creases and one with tear. Binding bowed. Other light wear. unknown books
ref. 002789Unbound. Very Good. Winsome collection of manuscript color illustrations and light text for part of a children's story. N.d. circa 1920s. The first card or what is presumed to be so bears the legend "To My Valentine" with the name of "Ann Warren Stewart" written on a mailbox. Since Ann is a character in these drawings we can assume she was not the author or illustrator but rather perhaps a recipient or dedicatee. The artwork is in the style loosely of Mabel Lucie Attwell or the Sally Dick and Jane readers. While it is simple and perhaps even a touch naive it is also very polished and almost certainly was executed by an adult. And so we see a small child fetching a giant heart-shaped valentine from a mailbox a toddler stumbling off a chair an older child trying to interest a baby in toys and an older toddler climbing up and down a high chair. Each of these cards is fit for framing and hanging on a wall. Now disbound there are three margin holes that once kept them in a binder. Light scattered soiling does not mar the preciousness and charm of the illustrations each 11 by 9 inches 29 by 22 cm each on heavy card stock. unknown books
1960ref. 3960Manuscript broadside n. d. 1960s; 24 x 19 unrolled; ink and pencil on off-white stock; corners with residue from being hung with tape; a bit of age-toning and creasing; in good to very good condition. A fabulous piece of mid-century folk art it announced a Fais Do-Do Dance "in Gym Barn" on "Friday Nite" featuring the "Bob Roberts Orchestra." The prospective attendees were encouraged to bring their gals and beaus and to dress as they liked. By the author paperback books
1848ref. 334n.p. 1848. About very good in contemporary half calf over brown marbled boards rubbing to edges and corners spine label missing from vol. I prior owner bookplates removed vol. I front hinge broken some pages reinforced others with cancels as apparently intended and with minor foxing to some pages as the leaves are in a variety of papers some more susceptible to foxing than others. An unpublished handwritten manuscript which appears to be a final draft of an ecclesiastical history of the English church and which clearly takes issue with many of the teachings of the contemporary Catholic church. Written throughout in a clear hand and with extensive footnote citations to writers such as Bede Gildas Columba and others. The work appears to be an abridged compilation of many works in a similar vein to F.G. Tomlin's History of England with a significant portion of early chapters borrowing heavily and verbatim from Tindal's translation of Rapin de Thoyras's History of England. A fascinating and unique work which was clearly a labor of love and displays the author's work process. The manuscript holds many more unknowns for a researcher to discover. Small 4to. 2 vols. 2 136pp.; 1 137-318pp. Written on rectos only but with notes and revisions on many versos and with many revisions tipped- or pasted-in. books
1930ref. 003989Seattle: Associated Press Photo 1930. First Edition. Very good. Press photo black & white; 10 x 8; typed paper tag agency ink stamp and production marks to verso; 1" strip originally detached and re-attached to left margin; overall in very good condition. Allegedly the very first photo after Emil Kading was found in the camp where he had made his last stand. In the late Fall of 1930 Kading and a charter pilot named E.A. "Paddy" Burke had been hired to fly a miner named "Three Finger" Bob Martin across the Canadian wilderness in a Junkers F13 on floats. Attempting an emergency landing because of bad weather one of floats would be severely damaged disabling the airplane. Poorly dressed and without adequate supplies the trio attempted to walk to a supply cache they were aware of further North. Burke would eventually die of starvation and exposure while the remaining two would continue walking for three weeks before giving up hope making a primitive camp and waiting for death. Though initially a massive search-and-rescue for them would be launched the only reason they would be found would be the tenacity of a young pilot - Everett Wasson - who would continue flying a search pattern almost two weeks after the rescue effort had been cancelled. 1745ref. 13390London: F. West 1745. Engraving printed on wove paper. Very good condition apart from a 5/8" tear in the right margin and a light water stain in the top right corner of the sheet. A stunning panoramic view of Westminster Bridge as seen from Lambeth on the south bank of London possibly from the series "A Collection of Views of old London and its Environs." Among the Georgian buildings on London's north bank the imposing Gothic structure of Westminster Abbey is visible as are the spires of the adjacent smaller church of St. Margaret. Further east one can discern the distinct clock tower of St. Martin-in-the-Fields which was designed by the Scottish architect James Gibbs and erected in Trafalgar Square in 1721. Spanning the bustling thoroughfare of the Thames and connecting north and south London is the impressive stone overpass Westminster Bridge. Based on a design by the French architect Monsieur Labelye the bridge is straddled by elegant stone balustrades that are punctuated by fourteen piers. It was constructed between 1739 and 1749 and was the only bridge aside from London Bridge that stood on the Thames during this period. In 1750 it was opened to the public. Cf.
