She was the first woman to be a cartoonist for the publisher Hearst. Dating this work is based on her marriage to Theodore Wiederseim from 1900-1911. After her divorce from Wiederseim and marriage to William Drayton in 1911 she signed her name using Drayton. The paper and printing of this booklet seem to be from the 1930s although the illustrations are signed with the name of her first husband. A book called Kiddie land was published around 1910 with her illustrator sister Margaret G. Hays and Thomas Burke containing verse and rhymes. This journal by the anonymous "King of the Swindlers gives a detailed account on the various scams and swindles in which the subject was implicated. Most of names in the text being lightly disguised. According the the introduction by the publisher "This singular miscellany fell into the Editor's hands through the carelessness of its owner who left it on the seat of a hackney coach. He was instantly succeeded by a lady who took possession of his journal and after satisfying her own curiosity gave it to the Editor; earnestly recommending the exposure of its contents for the information and benefit of the community. Tue mere possession under these circumstances did not in the Editor's opinion authorize his publishing or justify his retaining it: he therefore advertised the manuscript -offering to resign it to the bearer of any memorandum or confession agreeing in substance and character with the original ; and declaring his determination if not claimed in a given time to prepare it for the press and to publish it as soon as possible. Having thus satisfied every punctilious consideration and no claim being made; he hath fulfiled his promise and discharged his duty to the public by promulging its contents." HBS 69478. $1500. J. 1969ref. 229941969. LGBTQTransgenderCross-Dressing Anonymous. Miss High-heels. New York: Grove Press Inc. 1969. First U.S. edition. Octavo. Lime green cloth boards in original photo-illustrated dust jacket. First published anonymously in Paris in 1931 Miss High-heels is an infamous work of fetishistic and feminization-themed erotica presented here in its first U.S. printing by Grove Press known for its defiance of censorship and promotion of transgressive literature. The novel tells the story of Dennis Evelyn Beryl a young effeminate English aristocrat who under the coercive influence of his domineering step-sister Helen is gradually transformed into "Denise" the titular Miss High-heels. Framed as a fictional memoir penned at Helen's command the narrative follows Dennis's journey from privileged heir to submissive cross-dresser. He is forced into girls' school stripped of masculine identifiers and eventually returned to the family estate clothed in "diamond-buckled satin slippers" and "the finest silks and satins" fully assuming the role of a "fetichiste-du-pied." Themes of humiliation and gender inversion mark the main character's transition as a fetish story but the book also allows for them to feel comfortable in their new identity: "Eventually Dennis is brought to realize how much more pleasurable is his life as a young girl and he willingly abandons his name fortune and life to the whims of Helen." Notable both for its elaborate prose and for its early depiction of forced feminization fantasy Miss High-heels occupies a space between pornography and proto-trans literature which would later flourish in small press chapbook format in the 80s and 90s. While drenched in the misogynistic and sadomasochistic tropes of its genre the text is nevertheless of interest among scholars of queer publishing history. Binding tight and square; boards clean; jacket bright with light shelfwear and a single 1/2 in closed tear at the top margin of front panel. Overall near fine in very good dust jacket. A historically resonant text in trans and fetish literature. unknown books

Overall a very good copy in a handsome binding "'Valentine and Orson' is a medieval French romance that became a popular English chapbook tale. Middle Dutch Low German German and Old Swedish versions suggest that the original verse version is an early-14th-century French text called 'Valentine and Nameless.' It first appeared in French prose with the author listed as Jac. Maillet in 1489 and was translated into English around 1502 by Henry Watson who added many plot details including a helpful dwarf magician and a dragon. Versions vary considerably in content as well as length: from Purfoot on it was stripped of sexual misdemeanors and Catholicism. The tale also appeared in verse and play forms which helped extend its popularity into the 19th century" Elaine Ostry in The Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature. Scarce in all formats it was first printed in Vermont in 1793 and also contained a"faithful narrative.towards Polly Davis" one copy survives at AAS; soon after an edition was released from Maine containing "a poem on Christian Experience" only two copies survive both at NYPL. The present first British edition is also the first separately printed edition recorded by ESTC at only 9 libraries. It has come to auction on only five occasions with the present being the only example currently in trade. An Authentic Account records a brief encounter between a white Englishman and an enslaved Black man on a plantation in New York. Focusing their dialogue on the word of God and on salvation the white narrator asserts that the two men could find common ground as "children of God.equally effectual with him" despite their diametrically opposed positions within the social power structure. "Neither the color of his body nor the condition of his present life could prevent him from being my dear brother in our dear saviour." Despite this argument for the spiritual equality of men of all races the white narrator in An Authentic Account never questions nor seeks to subvert a power structure that would empower him while violently debasing Black people. Rather he passively participates in the Evangelical attitude so common of the era which considered enslavement an opportunity for saving the souls of uncivilized peoples who otherwise could not access the word of God. It was a position which abolitionist Evangelicals including William Wilberforce and Hannah More would decry as the height of hypocrisy in their own work during the period calling upon Christians not only to see Black people as spiritual equals but also as humans deserving equal liberty and dignity.
