1710ref. Barbier, IV, 1103

1886ref. 5382Liverpool United Kingdom: Turner and Dunnett 1886. First Edition. soft. Fair. N/A. Ye true and Authentique Historie of ye good old Towne of Leverpoole Triplets Anonymous — First Edition Publication: Liverpool Printed by Turner and Dunnett c. 1886 Formatting: 4to pp. 40. Condition Report: Fair. The original stiff paper boards exhibit moderate overall soiling age-toning and edge-wear which is characteristic of a fragile late-Victorian publication. Structurally the binding is significantly compromised; the internal hinge is completely split at the gutter opposite the title page exposing the underlying webbing and causing the front board to be tenderly attached. Despite this external fragility the text block remains remarkably sound and cohesive. The interior pages are notably bright and clean free from significant foxing or damp-staining with only occasional very minor spotting. The front cover retains its striking typography and charming decorative woodcut elements without major loss. Catalogue Note: This is an exceptionally rare presumed first and only edition of this late-19th-century local guide to Liverpool. Issued pseudonymously by "Triplets" the work presents a whimsical mock-archaic history of the city complete with humorous vignettes. The front cover bears a splendid decorative masthead featuring mythical sea creatures above the iconic Liver Bird and the city's Latin motto "Deus nobis haec otia fecit" "God hath granted us this ease". Printed locally by Turner and Dunnett original physical copies of this ephemeral work are virtually non-existent on the open antiquarian market today. Modern availability is strictly restricted to print-on-demand facsimiles sourced from the British Library's holdings making this surviving original copy a scarce piece of Victorian regional topography. A charmingly archaic and highly uncommon 19th-century guide to the city of Liverpool written under the playful pseudonym "Triplets" and featuring evocative woodcut illustrations. Turner and Dunnett unknown
