1947ref. 5827London United Kingdom: Chatto & Windus 1947. First Edition. hardcover. Near Fine. N/A. Publication: London Chatto & Windus 1947 Formatting: Cr. 8vo pp. 64. Condition Report: Near Fine. The book has been preserved remarkably well boasting a firm square binding with vibrant unfaded red cloth boards and bright gilt lettering to the spine. Internally the text block sits squarely and the pages remain exceptionally clean and tidy with only the faintest signs of careful handling. The original dust jacket is fully intact and highly attractive presenting only slight rubbing to the extremities and very minor toning to the spine and rear panel with no significant chips or tears that would detract from its overall aesthetic. Catalogue Note: This is the first UK edition of Huxley's thought-provoking essay published by Chatto & Windus in 1947. It is presented in its original dust jacket which notably retains its unclipped '3s. 6d. net' price on the front flap. While not illustrated the volume serves as a fascinating physical artifact of post-war British publishing. The copyright page features the declaration that it was 'PRODUCED IN GREAT BRITAIN IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORIZED ECONOMY STANDARDS' reflecting the lingering material restrictions of the era. The rear panel of the jacket also advertises a list of 'REPRINTING Standard Titles from the list of Chatto & Windus'. This title is relatively common on the open market; however securing a copy in such a well-preserved state complete with a vibrant and intact dust jacket is increasingly desirable for collectors of Huxley’s non-fiction works. Written in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War Science Liberty and Peace is Aldous Huxley’s potent critique of the centralization of power and the misuse of scientific advancement. As the dust jacket notes the essay is an "exciting and powerful plea for the humanistic application of scientific knowledge". Huxley argues that technological progress rather than liberating humanity has been repeatedly co-opted to increase oppression and wage devastating wars. Featuring "closely reasoned argument and a brilliant analysis of the technicalities involved" the book supports Huxley's "fervent conviction of the need to fight for the spiritual and physical needs of the individual". In his 1932 classic dystopian novel Brave New World Aldous Huxley depicted a future society in thrall to science and regulated by sophisticated methods of social control. Nearly thirty years later in Brave New World Revisited Huxley checked the progress of his prophecies against reality and argued that many of his fictional fantasies had grown uncomfortably close to the truth. Brave New World Revisited includes Huxley's views on overpopulation propaganda advertising and government control and is an urgent and powerful appeal for the defence of individualism still alarmingly relevant today.
