1954réf. 190560London: Chatto & Windus 1954. First UK edition. In 1952 Huxley contacted the psychiatric researcher Humphry Osmond requesting that he be allowed to take the psychedelic drug mescaline under observation. Huxley felt that the brain restricts consciousness and was hoping that mescaline would increase awareness; The Doors of Perception was Huxley's account of the subsequent experiment which took place in May 1953. The work takes its title from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1793: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is: Infinite. For man has closed himself up till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern". Huxley's detailing of the aesthetic and psychological revelations he experienced while under the influence of mescaline prompted his publishers to say of the manuscript that: "You are the most articulate guinea pig that any scientist could hope to engage" Murray p. 399. The UK edition was preceded by the US edition by eight days. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt bottom edge untrimmed. With dust jacket designed by John Woodcock. After a series of dissections of primate brains Huxley disproved Owen's claim that only humans possessed a Hippocampus minor a portion of the brain now known as the calcar avis.Garrison & Morton 165. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Ira Goldblatt. Uncommon in this condition. Man and His Future is an anthology derived from a 1963 London symposium sponsored by the Ciba Foundation that brought together sixteen internationally recognized biologists to discuss the long-term prospects of human evolution and scientific progress. Among its most significant contributions is J. B. S. Haldane’s essay “Biological Possibilities for the Human Species in the Next Ten Thousand Years” which contains what is widely regarded as the first scientific reference to the concept of human cloning—marking the initial use of the terms “clone” and “cloning” outside of agricultural contexts. The collection also features a contribution by Julian Huxley whose evolutionary humanism and familial connection to Brave New World underscore the intersection of science and speculative ethics.
