Publisher's half white parchment over green-gray boards brown label lettered in gilt to spine and top edge gilt; in its original white dust jacket with "five dollars net" printed to front flap lettered in black with publisher's device to front panel. Overall a clean copy in an attractive example of the exceedingly scarce original dust jacket. Those Barren Leaves is a satirical novel that attacks the superficiality of cultural elitism. Specifically it tells the story of Mrs. Aldwinkle and her companions who gather in Italy to recreate the literary achievements and cultural glory of the Italian Renaissance. However each member of the group which includes a philosopher a poet and a novelist among others proves in his or her own way to fall short of Mrs. Aldwinkle's expectations of grandeur. The book's title is derived from Wordsworth's poem "The Tables Turned" which concludes with the stanza: "Enough of Science and of Art; / Close up those barren leaves; / Come forth and bring with you a heart / That watches and receives." . Signed by Author. First American Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. New York: George H. Doran Company hardcover
1980rif. 766Liverpool University Press 1980. First edition. A highly desirable signed association copy of Reflections on Muscle the fourteenth volume in the prestigious Sherrington Lectures series written by Sir Andrew Huxley 1917–2012—Nobel Prize–winning physiologist and co-discoverer of the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction. In this work Huxley synthesizes decades of research into muscular physiology offering both a historical account of earlier experimental work and a detailed exposition of his own landmark contributions from the 1950s onward. The text is richly illustrated with diagrams micrographs and comparative schematics that elucidate such topics as filament overlap cross-bridge mechanics tension generation and ATP-driven force cycles. It remains one of the most accessible and authoritative retrospectives on the biophysical basis of muscle function. This copy is personally inscribed by Sir Andrew Huxley to the eminent physicist feminist philosopher of science and MacArthur Fellow Evelyn Fox Keller dated August 2001. This is an exceptional association between two influential figures in the history and philosophy of biological science. The inscription reads: “For Prof. Evelyn Fox Keller / With best wishes / Andrew Huxley / August 2001.” Books signed by Huxley are scarce; association copies to major scientific figures are extremely rare making this a significant item for collectors of physiology Nobel Prize authors and the intellectual history of 20th-century science. Condition & Binding: Hardcover volume in its original publisher’s boards protected by a grey protective cover/dust jacket with gilt titling to the front and spine. The protective cover shows noticeable wear including small chips edge creasing and a tear at the lower edge but remains intact and functional. The underlying boards are clean and well-preserved. The text block is crisp with bright unmarked pages except for the author’s inscription. Binding remains tight and square. Overall- very good. . Liverpool University Press unknown
