1927Best.-Nr. 2360New York & London: Harper & Brothers 1927. First Edition. Near fine/Near fine. 8vo 7 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches 188 x 132 mm; 392 pp. Red cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine spine ends a little bumped. Original dust jacket printed in blue on yellow laid paper and protected in archival mylar cover. The fore-edge of the text block has deckled edges; pages evenly toned binding tight. In this book Huxley set out his vision of a modern scientific humanism to replace traditional revelation-based religion. He argues that advances in biology and evolution have made supernatural explanations unnecessary but that humans still need meaning ethical guidance and a sense of spiritual experience. Instead of relying on divine authority Huxley proposes a "religion" grounded in science reason and an evolutionary understanding of life. Sir Julian Sorell Huxley 1887-1975 was a prominent 20th century British evolutionary biologist eugenicist and science communicator. A key figure in the "modern synthesis" of evolution he was the first Director-General of UNESCO co-founder of the World Wildlife Fund WWF and a leading proponent of secular scientific humanism.
