2021réf. BIBHB0158736642021. Hardcover. New. About The Book -: In writing this book about Crayfishes it has not been my intention to compose a zoological monograph on that group of animals. Such a work to be worthy of the name would require the devotion of years of patient study to a mass of materials collected from many parts of the world. Nor has it been my ambition to write a treatise upon our English crayfish which should in any way provoke comparison with the memorable labours of Lyonet Bojanus or Strauss Durckheim upon the willow caterpillar the tortoise and the cockchafer. How the careful study of one of the commonest and most insignificant of animals leads us step by step from every-day knowledge to the widest generalizations and the most difficult problems of zoology; and indeed of biological science in general. For whoever will follow its pages crayfish in hand and will try to verify for himself the statements which it contains will find himself brought face to face with all the great zoological questions which excite so lively an interest at the present day; he will understand the method by which alone we can hope to attain to satisfactory answers of these questions; and finally he will appreciate the justice of Diderots remark About the Author -: Thomas Henry Huxley PC FRS HonFRSE FLS 1825 1895 was an English biologist and anthropologist specialising in comparative anatomy. He is known as ""Darwin's Bulldog"" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The stories regarding Huxley's famous debate in 1860 with Samuel Wilberforce were a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution and in his own career although historians think that the surviving story of the debate is a later fabrication. Huxley had been planning to leave Oxford on the previous day but after an encounter with Robert Chambers the author of Vestiges he changed his mind and decided to join the debate. Wilberforce was coached by Richard Owen against whom Huxley also debated about whether humans were closely related to apes. He worked on invertebrates clarifying relationships between groups previously little understood. Later he worked on vertebrates especially on the relationship between apes and humans. After comparing Archaeopteryx with Compsognathus he concluded that birds evolved from small carnivorous dinosaurs a theory widely accepted today. The tendency has been for this fine anatomical work to be overshadowed by his energetic and controversial activity in favour of evolution and by his extensive public work on scientific education both of which had significant effects on society in Britain and elsewhere. Huxley's 1893 Romanes Lecture Evolution and Ethics is exceedingly influential in China; the Chinese translation of Huxley's lecture even transformed the Chinese translation of Darwin's Origin of Species. 1967réf. 2006275New York: Random House 1967. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Barbara Cooney. Lightest wear to the book; more to the priced protected jacket which show some shelf wear at the spine tips and along the top edge front and back with a few very short closed tears. Clean and unmarked. Based on stories told to their niece by Aldous Huxley and his first wife Maria Nys. First published in 1967 by Random House reviews were mixed. "For Christmas 1944 the author of Brave New World wrote this story of a crow couple's battle with an egg-eating snake giving it to his six-year-old niece. With Huxley's mordant wit in ample supply this tale will entertain literary novelty seekers; it's best suited for children who don't mind some darkness in their stories." Publishers Weekly. "The special talents of Aldous Huxley are absent the special talent of Barbara Cooney wasted in this small story of a crow couple who protect their unborn progeny by tricking a marauding snake with clay eggs; in his discomfiture he ties himself up in knots and ends his days as a clothes-line for the growing crow family. If the plot is inconsequential the details are ridiculous especially the self-winding snake and the would be mother who lays an egg regularly every day. This started as an entertainment for a favorite niece and it still sounds homemade." Kirkus Reviews.
