After offering himself up as a test subject Huxley was administered a supervised dose and as he explains via William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell "the doors of perception were cleansed." In his introduction Huxley explains: "The other world which mescaline admitted me was not the world of visions; it existed out there in what I could see with my eyes open. The great change was in the realm of objective fact . I was seeing what Adam had seen on the morning of his creation - the miracle moment by moment of naked existence." While criticized for its promotion of psychedelic drug use The Doors of Perception was also a foundational text for the 1960s counterculture inspiring both Timothy Leary's psychedelic research and Jim Morrison's band The Doors. In 1958 Huxley published a sequel - the essay "Heaven and Hell" which refers to the two possible experiences one will have after breaking through the "doors of perception." . First Edition. 1954rif. 190560London: Chatto & Windus 1954. First UK edition. In 1952 Huxley contacted the psychiatric researcher Humphry Osmond requesting that he be allowed to take the psychedelic drug mescaline under observation. Huxley felt that the brain restricts consciousness and was hoping that mescaline would increase awareness; The Doors of Perception was Huxley's account of the subsequent experiment which took place in May 1953. The work takes its title from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1793: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is: Infinite. For man has closed himself up till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern". Huxley's detailing of the aesthetic and psychological revelations he experienced while under the influence of mescaline prompted his publishers to say of the manuscript that: "You are the most articulate guinea pig that any scientist could hope to engage" Murray p. 399. The UK edition was preceded by the US edition by eight days. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt bottom edge untrimmed. With dust jacket designed by John Woodcock. Huxley's distress at what he regarded as the spiritual bankruptcy of the modern world led him towards mysticism and the use of hallucinatory drugs. This exploratory essay in which he describes the use of mescaline to induce visionary states of mind sparked a generation of drug experimentation and it continues to challenge beliefs about the drugs condoned and forbidden in society. Like his contemporaries D.H. Lawrence and George Orwell Huxley abhorred conformity and denounced the orthodox attitudes of his time. The enormous range of his intellect and the pungency of his writing make him one of the most significant voices of the early 20th century. Book Collector No.287 p32-62 'The Sixties'.
