First edition hardcover 8.50 x 6.00" 21.0 x 15.0 cm beige cloth with maroon lettering on spine front cover and top stain. Unclipped dust jacket is maroon with cream lettering 620 pp. Believed by some to be Huxley's greatest novel this novel jumps around chronologically between the 1890's and 1936 and describes the ennui of the upper class British intelligentsia in the person of Anthony Beavis which is overcome after a long journey by a turning towards pacifism and mysticism. The book shows some light wear with a tear on the front dust jacket and a few chips missing near the top spine rated very good overall. A very nice first edition of Huxley's best novel. 1936Best.-Nr. 150147London: Chatto & Windus 1936. First edition of Huxley's classic work which many consider one of his finest. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Written at the height of his powers immediately after Brave New World Aldous Huxley's highly acclaimed Eyeless in Gaza is his most personal novel. Huxley's bold nontraditional narrative tells the loosely autobiographical story of Anthony Beavis a cynical libertine Oxford graduate who comes of age in the vacuum left by World War I. Unfulfilled by his life loves and adventures Anthony is persuaded by a charismatic friend to become a Marxist and take up arms with Mexican revolutionaries. But when their disastrous embrace of violence nearly kills them Anthony is left shattered—and is forced to find an alternative to the moral disillusionment of the modern world. Journalist Simon Heffer has called the novel Huxley’s best book and single ‘great novel’. For Heffer the book both harkens back to Huxley’s early satires and links to the more serious and philosophical concerns of his later novels. Chatto & Windus hardcover

This semiautobiographical novel criticized the dearth of spiritual values in contemporary society. In nonchronological fashion the novel covers more than 30 years in the lives of a group of upper-middle-class English friends especially Anthony Beavis and his longtime married lover Helen. His intense prep-school friendships continue at Oxford; most important are his relationships with Brian Foxe who later commits suicide; with Hugh Ledwidge who marries Helen; and with Mark Staithes who becomes a Marxist and with whom Beavis goes to Mexico to fight in a revolution. While in Mexico Beavis adopts a Buddhist-centered philosophy practices meditation and becomes a pacifist." The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature hardcover
