Bereits im Alter von 17 Jahren begann er in Wöhlers Laboratorium mit chemischen Arbeiten. C. Bernard C. Ludwig und E. Brücke übten größten Einfluß auf ihn aus. Ihm verdankt man die Entdeckung des Myosins des flüssigen kontraktilen Muskelplasmas er prägte den Begriff des Enzyms für die umgeformten Fermentvorstufen und des Trypsins für das Pankreasenzym für die Eiweißverdauung.
