ref. 146923All approximately 380 × 410 mm; in excellent unused condition. Five of the covers have an approximation of the Rising Sun badge and the text 'Australian Commonwealth Military Forces 1941' with additional text reading 'Souvenir of Palestine' or 'From the Holy Land'. Three have been personalised with 'To my Dear Sister' 'To my Mother' and 'To my Darling'. Offered together with a further two cushion covers 'Souvenir of Egypt' and 'Souvenir de France' both with more generic designs. Two of the former pieces have 'From Dick with love' written in ink on the verso; one of these is inkstamped 'Fakhr-Edine M. El-Zohri Mercery . Gaza Palestine'. 7 items. unknown
ref. 146922Near fine. Three embroidered silk panels with coloured fabric onlays approximately 545 × 540 mm 470 × 530 mm and 555 × 590 mm. Light creases otherwise in near-fine condition still tacked to the original backing paper. Dutch-born Richard Schenk enlisted on 27 July 1915 and was deployed to Suvla Bay just in time to participate in the evacuation of Allied troops from the Gallipoli Peninsula the RANBT was the last unit to leave. The first of the silks has the text 'Victory for the Allies R.S. 389 Suvla Bay 1st Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train'. The second silk has the text 'Victory of the Allied Army 1916 To Elsie With Love From Richard Cairo Egypt'. Schenk's service record gives as his next of kin his wife Elsie Nellie. The final silk has the text 'Souvenir of The Great National War August 4th 1914'. All three would have been purchased in the Middle East likely all in Cairo where there was a flourishing industry for items such as this. As is often the case all feature flags of allied nations Britain France Belgium Serbia Italy Japan Russia the Russian navy and one has designs of a warship aeroplane and artillery piece. Appropriately for a member of a naval unit all three have a life preserver at the centre of the design two with a window within which to mount a small photograph. They have never been used which accounts for the retention of the original backing paper and the excellent state of preservation. After Gallipoli Schenk spent six months in the Middle East before being discharged due to a finger contraction in July 1916. He reinlisted in 1917 with the new service number 38610 and served as a gunner with the 8th Field Artillery Brigade on the Western Front. 3 items. unknown
1976ref. 13285Hardcover 188 pages NOT ex-library. Contents are clean and bright throughout untanned with unmarked text free of inscriptions and stamps firmly bound. A bit of age-spotting on the upper page edges externally. In a bright untorn and unclipped dust jacket design by Jessica Gwynne. -- A memoir of growing up in the Cornish town of Hayle the book records Erma Harvey James childhood from the perspective of later life when much of that world had already disappeared. Drawing on detailed recollection rather than nostalgia alone she describes family life in a small industrial and harbour community local schools and chapels and the rhythms of days shaped by the beach the weather and the working timetable of the town. Everyday scenes such as shopping outings seasonal celebrations and neighbours habits are used to build a ground-level picture of Cornish life as it was experienced by girls and young women. James later became known as an embroiderer and designer and her eye for pattern and texture shows in the way she writes about houses clothes church interiors and the coastal landscape. The book sits within a wider tradition of Cornish memoirs but is distinguished by its focus on Hayle. It is a useful complement to accounts centred on more famous coastal villages or on the artistic colonies further west. -- "In this charming memoir Erma James brilliantly captures the atmosphere of her childhood days in Cornwall over 50 years ago. The beauty of the countryside around Hayle and the joy of leaving the city made a deep and lasting impression on her and she recalls with affection the wonder of discovering for the first time a natural world of flowers and hedgerows in which to a small child a pot of pink geraniums had a special magic of its own. We learn too of her mother's strange convictions . and her theory about unlucky colours which extended even to the garden all blue mauve or purple flowers being dug up and replaced by oriental poppies or red-hot poker. And then of course there was the sea and long stretches of sand which to her child's mind were "a stretch of time dreamlike verging on another reality". All this and much more is fondly remembered in an appealing style that will delight all lovers of an aspect of England that the author knew so well. Erma Harvey James was brought up in Cornwall and lived there up to the age of 20. After studying design at Plymouth College of Art she worked for an educational publisher in London and later specialised in fabric collage held several one-man shows and her work was exhibited by the Arts Council. She now lives in Dorset is co-founder of the Inner Door Puppet Theatre at Swanage and is especially interested in shadow puppets which she feels are particularly well suited to plays based on the old Cornish legends."
