A bit of age-spotting on the upper page edges externally. In a bright untorn and unclipped dust jacket design by Jessica Gwynne. -- A memoir of growing up in the Cornish town of Hayle the book records Erma Harvey James childhood from the perspective of later life when much of that world had already disappeared. Drawing on detailed recollection rather than nostalgia alone she describes family life in a small industrial and harbour community local schools and chapels and the rhythms of days shaped by the beach the weather and the working timetable of the town. Everyday scenes such as shopping outings seasonal celebrations and neighbours habits are used to build a ground-level picture of Cornish life as it was experienced by girls and young women. James later became known as an embroiderer and designer and her eye for pattern and texture shows in the way she writes about houses clothes church interiors and the coastal landscape. The book sits within a wider tradition of Cornish memoirs but is distinguished by its focus on Hayle. It is a useful complement to accounts centred on more famous coastal villages or on the artistic colonies further west. -- "In this charming memoir Erma James brilliantly captures the atmosphere of her childhood days in Cornwall over 50 years ago. The beauty of the countryside around Hayle and the joy of leaving the city made a deep and lasting impression on her and she recalls with affection the wonder of discovering for the first time a natural world of flowers and hedgerows in which to a small child a pot of pink geraniums had a special magic of its own. We learn too of her mother's strange convictions . and her theory about unlucky colours which extended even to the garden all blue mauve or purple flowers being dug up and replaced by oriental poppies or red-hot poker. And then of course there was the sea and long stretches of sand which to her child's mind were "a stretch of time dreamlike verging on another reality". All this and much more is fondly remembered in an appealing style that will delight all lovers of an aspect of England that the author knew so well. Erma Harvey James was brought up in Cornwall and lived there up to the age of 20. After studying design at Plymouth College of Art she worked for an educational publisher in London and later specialised in fabric collage held several one-man shows and her work was exhibited by the Arts Council. She now lives in Dorset is co-founder of the Inner Door Puppet Theatre at Swanage and is especially interested in shadow puppets which she feels are particularly well suited to plays based on the old Cornish legends."
