Author retired as General Manager of the service in 1971 and completed two years of research in preparation for this work. Prepared from the files of the London Street Railway Company and its successor, the London Transportation Commission, from newspaper stories, memories of veteran employees, and many other sources. "Includes a brief outline of London from its beginning as a pioneer settlement in 1826 to 1875 when public transportation commenced, because the story of horse-drawn trams, electric street cars and buses is really part of the story of our community and the people who built it over the years." - from Foreward. 2012New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 243 p. " Eli Shaul (1916-2004) was a Turkish Jew. After spending his childhood in the colorful Balat neighborhood, he received a superb education at the prestigious Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Istanbul Men's High School), the University of Istanbul, and the Reserve Officers Training School in Ankara. While still in high school, he began keeping a diary, which he continued during his college years and the time he spent serving as an army dentist in eastern Turkey. Those diaries, contained in this book, provide rare insights into what life was like for minorities - and particularly for Jews - in Turkey during the nineteen thirties and forties. Atatürk's Republic, which most of them ardently supported, had raised their hopes of at last being accepted as fully equal Turkish citizens in every way, but those hopes were cruelly dashed when discrimination and anti-Semitism continued, and even worsened, especially after Atatürk's death in 1938. Not surprisingly, most of Turkey's Jews immigrated to Israel after it won its independence in 1948. That exodus provoked harsh criticism of the Jews in the Turkish press, and the Turkish Jews founded their own newspapers and magazines to respond to those attacks. Shaul was one of the first contributors to Turkey's fledgling Jewish press, and some of his most important articles are included in this volume. He himself moved to Israel in 1950 but continued to write articles for Turkish Jewish publications throughout his life and also authored a book on the folklore of the Turkish Jews. From Balat to Bat Yam is a testament to Eli Shaul's deeply felt patriotism, which consisted not only of love for his native Turkey but insistence that she treat all her citizens as equals".
2008New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). Edition in English. [x], 194 p., color and b/w ills. From 8000 BC to 2000 BC six thousand years of the Burdur-Antalya region. When attempting to understand and comment on the civilisation in which we live, one of the subjects that arouses the most curiosity is undoubtedly the desire to learn the stages that mankind has passed through to reach this point in time. In the book in front of you the author has attempted to describe, with archaeological facts, some of the development process of civilisation in the prehistoric period before the discovery of writing, from around 8000 to 2000 BC, in the region of Southwest Anatolia, Burdur and Antalya. The presence of many impressive city and monuments from the Classical Period in the Antalya and Burdur regions and their vicinity reflects the importance of this region in historical times. However, the region also has important and interesting finds from the prehistoric periods. One of the aims of this book is to introduce and describe as many as possible of the visual finds uncovered in the excavations carried out over the past 50 years at the four main prehistoric settlements of the region, Hacilar, Kurucay, Hoyucek and Bademagaci. While some of the pictures, drawings and plans are presented for the first time in this book, most of them have been published before in excavation reports, books or articles. However, as is the case in most academic fields, the majority of these publications are only read by professionals, making it virtually impossible for most people to have access to them. It is hoped that this book will help to change this situation to a degree, as it has been presented in such a way as to enable all those interested in the subject to benefit from the information given.
