1813Best.-Nr. 829801813. Rare Prospectus for a Legal Periodical: Only One Other Copy Known Legal Journal. Williams John of the Inner Temple. The Legal and Literary Journal and Mercantile Magazine. To be Continued Monthly And Number Three to be Published January 1st 1814. Conducted by John Williams Esq. Author of the Laws of Trade and Commerce &c. &c. Assisted by Several Literary and Commercial Gentlemen. London: S.n. circa 1813. 10-1/4" x 8" 26 cm x 20 cm broadside address of recipient and postmark to verso remnants of red wax seal. Moderate toning two horizontal fold lines. A very good copy of a rare item. $350. This is a rare and detailed prospectus for a periodical published under the guidance of John Williams a barrister and author of The Law of Wills and Codicils 1810 The Laws of Trade and Commerce 1812 and A Treatise on the Study and Practice of the Law 1823. Since the prospectus states that issue "Number Three" will be published in January 1814 it may be assumed that two issues had already been printed but today no issues of any date are found in Library Hub OCLC or in major libraries including the British Library or Library of Congress. This prospectus then with its five-part table giving the "Proposed Arrangement" of topics may preserve all that remains of the content and intentions of this serial. The themes of the "Legal Department" included "1. A Copious Epitome of the Decisions in the Courts of Law and Equity as also in the Prize Courts. 2. A Full and Faithful Abridgement of the Public Statutes Immediately on Their Receiving the Royal Signature. 3. Dissertations on Constitutional Subjects. 4. Dissertations on the Various Branches of Law" and 5. Legal Biography. " Rarely will a prospectus state its own print run but this one does: 3000 copies. As we find only one other exemplar in the world at Yale Law School the rarity may be calculated with unusual exactness: the survival rate for copies of this prospectus being one fifteenth of 1%. Yale's catalogue record does not indicate a manuscript address. Ours is addressed on its verso to Robert Thorpe 1771-1847 attorney and Clerk of the Peace in Alnwick Northumberland. There are many extant copies of Williams's treatises. By contrast his periodical The Legal and Literary Journal and its prospectus are his rarest productions by. unknown

Gideon promises that his paper "will be emphatically a National Press designed for circulation in every section of the country. The object of the paper will be to harmonize the action and promote the efficient organization of the Whig party as well as to diffuse its principles and arouse its spirit and enthusiasm." Subscription costs are printed after which Gideon signs in type from Washington in June 1848. Beneath Gideon's name is a recommendation from seven members of the Whig Executive Committee of Congress urging support for the Paper which "will prove a vehicle of useful political information and if generally circulated will contribute powerfully to the desired change in the Administration of the Government." There follows a section for persons to sign up for subscriptions with their post office addresses. Our copy has no names listed. Not located on OCLC as of August 2025. George S. Gideon unknown

1879Best.-Nr. 373732Kenealy London 1879. Newspaper. Good Condition. A rare and incendiary sequence of five consecutive issues of The Englishman published in November 1879 and edited by Edward V.H. Kenealy the disgraced barrister turned editorial crusader. These papers are not passive reportage; they are the printed artillery of a man who refused to let the Tichborne verdict stand. Kenealy having been ejected from the courtroom and Parliament alike took to the press with messianic fervour. The Englishman became his pulpit his battlefield and his confessional. Across these five issues he wages war on the establishment lionizes the Claimant and re-litigates the trial in serialized fury. The masthead may promise news but the content delivers obsession. Highlights Include: Current Notes that read like dispatches from a legal insurgency; Satirical columns Own Column Letter Bag Mirror dripping with coded allegiances; International affairs refracted through the lens of grievance and vindication; A tone that oscillates between prophetic indignation and theatrical absurdity. Why It Matters: These issues are scarce in institutional holdings and virtually unseen on the open market. They offer a vivid glimpse into the final phase of Kenealy's public life when the courtroom had closed its doors but the printing press remained his weapon. For collectors of radical Victorian print culture legal history or editorial eccentricity this is a crusade in five acts. Preserved in a modern card cover prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 22 x 35 cms. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Newspapers; Special Interest. This item may require more postage than the rates shown for delivery outside the UK. If extra postage is required we will contact you before processing your order and you will be given the details and option to decline the extra cost. Kenealy unknown
