2007réf. 38600Oxford University Press. Near Fine. Softcover. Very light shelfwear; 307 pages; Alcestis is one of Euripides' richest and most brilliant--as well as most controversial--plays. But apart from D. J. Conacher's student text no annotated edition in English has appeared for more than fifty years. The present work is designed to aid close reading and to serve as an introduction to the serious study of the play in its various aspects. The introduction covers the background to the story in myth and folktale its treatment by other writers from antiquity to the present the critical reception of Euripides' play and its textual transmission and meters. The notes are designed in particular to help readers who have been learning Greek for a relatively short time. More advanced matter such as discussion of textual problems is placed in square brackets at the end of the note. . 2007. 0199254672 . Oxford University Press paperback

Lower corners bumped.; 324 pages; Thucydides Pericles and the Idea of Athens in the Peloponnesian War is the first comprehensive study of Thucydides' presentation of Pericles' radical redefinition of the city of Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Martha Taylor argues that Thucydides subtly critiques Pericles' vision of Athens as a city divorced from the territory of Attica and focused instead on the sea and the empire. Thucydides shows that Pericles' reconceputalization of the city led the Athenians both to Melos and to Sicily. Toward the end of his work Thucydides demonstrates that flexible thinking about the city exacerbated the Athenians' civil war. Providing a thorough critique and analysis of Thucydides' neglected book 8 Taylor shows that Thucydides praises political compromise centered around the traditional city in Attica. In doing so he implicitly censures both Pericles and the Athenian imperial project itself.; Signed by Author . 2010. 0521765935 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

1992réf. 37078Routledge. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover. Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. Book has a few tiny spots to top of textblock.; 240 pages; In Dangerous Voices Holst-Warhaft investigates the power and meaning of the ancient lament especially women's mourning of the dead and sets out to discover why legislation was introduced to curb these laments in antiquity. An investigation of laments ranging from New Guinea to Greece suggests that this essentially female art form gave women considerable power over the rituals of death. The threat they posed to the Greek state caused them to be appropriated by male writers including the tragedians. Holst-Warhaft argues that the loss of the traditional lament in Greece and other countries not only deprives women of their traditional control over the rituals of death but leaves all mourners impoverished. . 1992. 0415072492 .
