With a view to create a liberal working environment for artists, the Maeght Family inaugurated the Maeght Foundation in 1964, with the aim of rekindling friendships it has formed with artists and intellectuals in the 1930s, prior to World War II. This endeavor lead to the creation of the first modern and contemporary art foundation conceived in France. Questioning life as well as art and offering unconventional perspectives, philosophical and artistic currents, movements such as Dadaism, Cubism, Surrealism, Automatism, and Existentialism developed in this period giving rise to the emergence of artists identifying themselves by these movements. Embracing hundreds of artists and intellectuals, the Maeght Family became their friends and patrons. Among these, Miró always maintained a special place for the Family.".

[Exhibition catalogue]. Prep. by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz et al. Giorgio de Chirico is one of the most extraordinary figures of the 20thcentury, a period marked by consecutive avant-garde movements. During this rich period that brought to fore different forms and modes of expression rather than themes in painting, de Chirico, as distinct from his contemporaries, created a unique metaphysical universe in which he carried the fresh themes he developed and carried to the center of his painting. Following the first metaphysical works he produced between 1910 and 1918, which also served as a source of inspiration for the Surrealists, he gravitated towards a different search with the changing dynamics of the post-World War I period. He was interested in ancient Greek and Roman art and re-interpreted the works of Old masters. He revisited metaphysical painting when he turned 80. He completed his artistic career with the new themes he developed in this area and the canvases he painted with lighter colours compared to his early period. The exhibition catalogue includes writings by the artist and encompassing essays focusing on de Chirico's artistic career and the Metaphysical Art, which he invented, as well as exemplifying his various periods ranging from his earliest works to his last ones.

The collection brings into view key current discussions on Turkey and additionally offers an idea about the changing art concepts during this process. Curated by Zeynep Yasa Yaman, the exhibition and catalogue showcase a selection from this rich collection.

The exhibition is also distinguished by the fact that it is the largest single exhibition ever organised outside Figueres exclusively with material from the Foundation's collection. The exhibition can be viewed between 20 September 2008 and 01 February 2009. Curator of the exhibition Montse Aguer Teixidor, stated that "For the first time we present Salvador Dalí in Istanbul as a unique, innovative, peculiar, brilliant and different artist. We wish to be able to bring the spirit of such museum, so everyone can understand and get a closer look at Dalí's thinking, his obsessions, his iconography, and the dreamy and surrealist world of a universal, provocative and unique artist."
