1900ref. BK0100New York: Franz Huld and Arthur Livingston 1900. Three illustrated private mailing cards approximately 3 ¼ x 5 ½ inches each with manuscript messages and Hoboken postmarks dated August 23 1900 addressed to J. H. McNally of Lowell Massachusetts. Minor handling wear and soiling very good. Three postcards depicting the destruction caused by the June 30 1900 North German Lloyd pier fire at Hoboken mailed from the city less than two months later by a man signing himself "Jim" to his brother in Lowell. Two are Franz Huld cards nos. 31 and 32 showing the North German Lloyd docks the day after the fire and the burning S.S. Saale; the third published by Arthur Livingston shows the ruins at the entrance to the company's docks. The sender adds brief observations from Hoboken to the printed disaster views. On the view of the ruined docks he writes "The fire is still smoking." Of the Saale: "This boat is still here they are repairing her." The third explains the group: "I saw these cards today and I thought you would like them. Everything is O.K." The fire swept through the North German Lloyd piers and several vessels in the harbor killing more than 300 people. Postcard historian George Miller has described it as "the first major disaster recorded on postcards" noting at least sixteen American postcard issues and an exceptionally rapid response by publishers; the earliest known copyright was registered only five days after the fire.1 The present cards were mailed while its physical aftermath remained visible on the Hoboken waterfront. 1 George Miller "The first major disaster recorded on postcards" Postcard History October 25 2021 https://postcardhistory.net/2021/10/the-first-major-disaster-recorded-on-postcards-the-hoboken-pier-fire-june-30-1900/. . ref. 69558Very Good. Light edge wear. Some with correspondence on the reverse. A couple postcards with areas of abrasion to the reverse. Two with minor markings on the front. The collection as a whole uses deltiology to explore the first half of the 20th century through a unique cultural eye. Postcards although that name was not established first began circulation during the era of the Civil War when the United States government transitioned from the stampless covers type of mail to letters enclosed in envelopes with revenue stamps sold to mail them. Thus plain penny postcards were created. Yet it wasn't until the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 that the modern "picture" postcard was introduced. Largely called private mailing cards or other names these illustrated postcards grew in popularity during 1893-1906. The pioneer era postcards had black and white and later colorful images on one side and on the verso the name and address of the recipient. No message or other writing was allowed on the back. This explains the cramped handwriting on the fronts of cards. In 1906 the US Congress passed a law allowing part of the back of the postcard to include a message with the right side still reserved for the name and address. This created an explosion in popularity of picture postcards postcard collecting groups and pen pals springing up around the world. Subsequently the name postal card post-card or post card started the modern era of pictorial correspondence and only a penny to mail. The collection includes printed postcards real photo postcards sepia tones undivided backs divided backs full bleed borders white borders lines and chromes and largely encompasses the full range and style of printing processes used for modern postcards from approximately 1900-1950. It is arranged by subject and constitutes 47 cards. The collection includes women reading books men reading books and advertisements promoting books and magazines. 1910ref. List3897United States 1910. Nine real photo postcards most standard postcard size several postally used with divided backs. Images include families and groups gathered on porches and in yards with phonographs or gramophones lakeside and camp scenes with record players an interior scene showing a man posed beside a piano and phonograph and several portraits of men with tabletop and horn machines. Some wear silvering soiling and handling; generally very good. A group of real photo postcards documenting the domestic and social use of gramophones and phonographs in the early twentieth century. The cards date from the period in which recorded sound was moving from novelty to common household entertainment. Victor introduced the internal-horn Victrola in 1906 and by the following decade phonographs had become recognizable features of parlors porches camps and other informal leisure settings. The commercial growth of the industry was rapid: Victor's 1904 Red Seal recording of Enrico Caruso singing "Vesti la giubba" is generally described as the first million-selling record while less expensive records and machines helped bring recorded music into a broader range of American homes.1 The group shows the machines among families vacationers young men porch groups and domestic interiors centering the new technology in social gatherings during the period. 1 Marc Hogan "How Much Is Music Really Worth" Pitchfork April 16 2015 accessed July 21 2026 https://web.archive.org/web/20150501155808/https://pitchfork.com/features/articles/9628-how-much-is-music-really-worth/. . unknown books
1920ref. List3820Chicago Illinois: Schlink Studio 1920. Real photo postcard measuring approximately 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Studio portrait of an African American musician standing in overcoat hat gloves and cane beside a chair displaying a saxophone and clarinet. Divided postcard back. Light wear and soiling with small loss or surface disturbance at lower margin; very good. A real photo postcard portrait of an African American musician posed with saxophone and clarinet. The sitter is not identified but the portrait was clearly made to present him as a professional or semi-professional performer rather than as an informal amateur. The formal clothing cane and carefully arranged instruments give the image the character of a publicity or theatrical portrait. The combination of saxophone and clarinet is especially appropriate to early twentieth-century dance-band and jazz performance when reed players commonly doubled on both instruments. The photograph likely dates from the period in which Black musicians circulated through local orchestras theater bands dance halls vaudeville circuits and early jazz ensembles often leaving behind few named records apart from photographs like this. A strong real photo postcard portrait of an African American reed player with good visual presence and clear musical content. . Schlink Studio unknown books
