ref. 14677Mid- 19th Century Tulwar fighting sword. The Tulwar was used by Muslim adversaries from Persia Iran Afghanistan and Northern India. It was both a cavalry and infantry weapon. The Tulwar had historically been the quintessential combat sword due to its superior handling while mounted on horseback. With a curved blade optimized for cutting and slashing with sweeping cuts delivered from the shoulder by a horseman without the danger of the blade getting stuck in bone or armor. It allowed for fierce slashing on all sides cutting through enemy formations while mounted on horseback. The sheaths were made with two very thin wood plates covered in fabric which explains their short life and absence here. This particular tulwar has a hand forged curved steel blade and steel handle with a disk shaped pommel. Dated to the mid- 19th century. Overall length 33". Blade shows signs of use in good condition. unknown books

1988ref. 61767bdLincoln Rhode Island: Andrew Mowbray Incorporated 1988. First Edition. Octavo orange cloth hardcover 124 pp. Fine in a Fine mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: No unit of the American Civil War served with more effect or won more renown than Berdan’s Sharpshooter’s; and acclaimed historian Wiley Sword tells us why. In these pages you will find the story of the United States Sharpshooters from beginning to end including the inspired inventor who founded and commanded the famous unit the hand-picked men who manned its ranks and the innovative weapon which they used with such precision. From training camp to the dissolution of the unit Sword traces the story of the 1st and 2nd U.S.S.S.: the qualities faults of their celebrated leader the internal power struggles among the officers and men their efforts to procure the Sharps rifle the units legendary fighting spirit the basis for their popularity with the press and notoriety with the rest of the army. Rich in anecdotal material Sword’s text also reaches scientific precision especially when he presents information for Berdan Sharps rifle collectors. His serial number charts alone are essential for identification. Also included are two fascinating appendices “The Dairy 1864 of Private William B. Green Co. G. 2D U.S.S.S.” such accounts are very rare especially late in the war because of the unit’s high mortality rate and “The Report of Major George G. Hastings 1st U.S.S.S. of the Battle of Chancellorsville May 3 1863” a document highly revealing of Berdan’s character and how he was regarded by the officers who served under him. 1986ref. 61769bdLincoln Rhode Island: Andrew Mowbray Incorporated 1986. First Edition. Octavo orange cloth hardcover 119 pp viii pp ads. Fine in a Fine mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Based on American design the British-made Enfield rifle was one of the most handsome and effective military arms of its day. While large quantities of these highly regarded rifles were imported by both North and South during the American Civil War it was in the hands of the weapons-starved Confederacy that the Enfield was to see its greatest moment. Southern blockade runners cargoed shipments of these arms right up to the last days of the great rebellion. The international intrigue the historical personalities and much of the personal correspondence that accompanied the traffic of Enfields to the C.S.A. is carefully chronicled on these pages by author Wiley Sword a rapidly rising authority on American military subjects. Additionally collectors will benefit from the author’s theories regarding identification of those Enfields that saw Confederate service -- long a matter of argument and conjecture among arms historians. Another weapons with strong romatnic/historical attachments to the South was the technically remarkable LeMat revolver. Although this rare pistol quickly established itself in notoriety little has been published regarding the manner in which the LeMat reached its Confederate market. New research presented here will prove of interest to many students of the times. As a bonus information regarding a variety of other Confederate small arms is presented within the appendixes. Andrew Mowbray, Incorporated, (1986). First Edition. hardcover books
1988ref. 60936bdWoonsocket RI: Andrew Mowbray Incorporated Publishers 1988. Octavo paperbound stiff color illus. slick green wrappers 124 pp. Fine. From lower cover: No unit of the Union Army carried more mystique during the Civil War than Berdan’s Sharpshooters officially known as the 1st and 2nd U. S. Sharpshooters. These picked men were almost as famous for their off-duty exploits as they were for their battlefield successes and quickly earned the nickname “Green Coats” because of their distinctive uniforms. Their founder Col. Hiram Berdan was just as flamboyant as his men and the story of how he raised and armed this famous unit makes for fascinating reading. Drawing heavily from firsthand accounts and original documents the author gives us an itimate and detailed account of one of our country’s very first “Special Forces.” Andrew Mowbray Incorporated Publishers, (1988). unknown books
