1678réf. 194492Paris: Chez Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy 1678. Wise words from a literary hostess First edition by the "hostess of the salon that perfected the genre of the maxime. A genre she virtually invented" Conley pp. 20 & 33. Probably originating as a literary parlor game the maxime was concerned with social dynamics psychology and intellectual virtues. Many of Sablé's maximes were critiques of aristocratic society. Raised in a diplomatic family Sablé 1599-1678 was known for her manners and moral character and for her incisive discernment of these qualities in others. The writer Madeleine de Scudéry praised her: "No one has ever known so perfectly all the differences about love. I know of no activity as agreeable as listening to her make distinctions between pure love and worldly love" our translation p. 67. Sablé established her celebrated salon around 1640 in the Place Royale. After she moved to the precincts of the Port-Royal convent in the 1650s the salon became associated with the Jansenist movement. The salon predominantly discussed philosophy in particular ethics. "This preoccupation with moral issues explored through epigrammatic analysis provided the conditions for the emergence of the salon's distinctive literary genre: the maxime" Conley p. 30. The most famous attendee was François de La Rochefoucauld whose works Sablé critiqued and edited. This posthumous compilation was edited by the priest Nicolas d'Ailly c.1630-1700. Duodecimo 143 x 78 mm pp. xviii 90 12. Title page vignette head- and tailpieces. Recent calf 5 raised bands spine lettered tooled and ruled in gilt edges speckled red. Contemporary inscriptions to front and rear blanks. Extremities rubbed gutters sporadically reinforced with archival tape light browning to page extremities occasional faint damp stains: in very good condition. John J. 1875réf. 145831875. Set of two original albumen prints depicting armed Arab and Bedouin camel riders published circa 1875 represents late nineteenth-century photographic engagement with tribal identity martial imagery and desert life in the Arab world. Produced during a period when European photographers and publishers circulated ethnographic and Orientalist imagery to Western audiences these photographs document the visual construction of the "Arab warrior" as both cultural type and romanticized emblem of desert autonomy. The images support research in Middle Eastern social history the history of photography colonial-era ethnographic representation and the visual politics of identity in the Ottoman and North African regions during the late nineteenth century. Albumen prints. Circa 1875. Each image approximately 8.25 x 11 inches. The first photograph shows an Arab warrior mounted astride a camel spear poised in throwing position with a sword secured to the saddle at the animal's flank. The rider and camel stand centered on a road lined with palm trees and vegetation suggesting an oasis or cultivated approach to settlement. The second photograph portrays a Bedouin figure traditionally dressed in a thobe and kufiyya standing beside his camel against an open desert landscape. The camel is saddled with the warrior's sword visible along its side and a solitary fort tower appears in the background evoking regional defensive architecture and territorial presence. Both compositions emphasize weaponry dress and mounted mobility as markers of status and identity. Such images circulated widely in European albums and travel publications shaping Western perceptions of Arab society through a lens that combined documentary detail with staged ethnographic typology. The prominence of spear and sword underscores continuity of martial symbolism at a time when imperial powers were consolidating control across North Africa and the Middle East. The juxtaposition of oasis roadway and stark desert fortification highlights environmental and political dimensions of nineteenth-century life in the region. Light age-related toning consistent with albumen process; minor surface wear and edge handling; images retain strong contrast and clarity. Overall very good condition. A compelling pair of nineteenth-century photographs reflecting the intersection of photography ethnographic representation and constructions of Arab martial identity. unknown
