1944réf. 5068Washington D.C. United States: United States War Department 1944. hardcover. Very Good. N/A. TM 5-3092 War Department Technical Manual: Tractor Crawler Diesel 70 to 90-DBHP Standard Caterpillar D7 74-In. Gage with LeTourneau XD-7 Bulldozer and R-7 Power Control Unit United States War Department — First Edition Publication: Washington D.C. United States War Department 1944 Formatting: 8vo variously paginated. Condition Report: Very Good. The original flexible card covers and cloth tape spine are largely well-preserved though they exhibit minor creasing and some light scuffing and soiling consistent with expected wartime field use. The extremities are mildly rubbed with slight curling to the corners. The cloth spine is mildly frayed at the head and tail yet the binding remains remarkably firm and tight. Internally the pages are bright and generally clean with a mild degree of age-toning to the text block edges and some light thumbing indicative of consultation. A faint unobtrusive dampstain is present at the upper margin of the cover and preliminary pages though this is purely cosmetic and does not obscure the text in any way. The volume is unmarked internally. Catalogue Note: This is the true first printing of this highly specific wartime technical manual issued by the United States War Department on 22 March 1944. Produced for the U.S. Corps of Engineers it details machinery manufactured by the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Peoria Illinois. Surviving wartime field manuals of this specificity especially those pertaining to iconic heavy engineering equipment are exceptionally scarce on the open market particularly when retaining their original intact bindings without severe degradation. Issued by the War Department at the height of the Second World War this highly specialised technical manual TM 5-3092 provided crucial guidance for the operation maintenance and deployment of the Caterpillar D7 diesel crawler tractor. Specifically detailing models equipped with the LeTourneau XD-7 Bulldozer and R-7 Power Control Unit this manual was an indispensable field resource for the U.S. Corps of Engineers. It stands today as a fascinating historical record of the heavy engineering machinery deployed to shape the battlefields and critical infrastructure of the Allied war effort.
