Il volume analizza le convinzioni che li animavano e le organizzazioni e i partiti che li sostenevano; come e dove si riunirono i primi partigiani e in particolare il gruppo di Malga Silvagno; la nascita e lo sviluppo del gruppo di Malga Campetto, che mise in atto la "guerriglia di movimento" contribuendo a diffondere la lotta armata; i rapporti conflittuali tra i partigiani di diversa ispirazione e la formazione del battaglione "Danton" di Giuseppe Marozin; la costituzione, verso la fine di aprile del 1944, delle principali formazioni partigiane del Vicentino, che più tardi estesero la loro azione anche nelle province limitrofe. Più che di strategie e tattiche, si parla di storie di persone e luoghi che evidenziano come la Resistenza armata abbia trovato terreno fertile nei giovani contadini e montanari, nella gente delle contrade, nell'ambiente operaio delle fabbriche, in buona parte del clero e degli intellettuali e persino tra le autorità civili e militari
