1919réf. 10351919. Excellent. Etching on antique cream laid paper with a partial watermark likely Arches 12 1/8 x 6 1/8 inches 308 x 156 mm full margins. Signed and dated in pencil in the lower right margin. First state of 6. One of only approximately 23 impressions before steel facing printed by Frederick Reynolds. Minor area of rubbing in the top right corner of the image area along with some general age tone and a few inscriptions in pencil in the lower margin well outside of the image area. The impression itself is rich and extremely detailed with excellent inking and rich burr. Fletcher 32. Born in 1887 in Washington DC John Taylor Arms studied at Princeton University and ultimately earned a degree in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1912. With the outbreak of W.W.I Arms served as an officer in the United States Navy and it was during this time that he turned his focus to printmaking having published his first etching in 1919. His first subjects were the Brooklyn Bridge near the Navy Yard and it was during his wartime travel that Arms created a series of extraordinarily detailed etchings based on gothic cathedrals and churches he visited in France and Italy. He used what was available to him namely sewing needles and a magnifying glass to create the incredibly rich and fine detail that his etchings are known for. Upon his return to New York after the war Arms enjoyed a successful career as a graphic artist created a series of etchings of American cities and published Handbook of Print Making and Print Makers Macmillan 1934. He served as President of the Society of American Graphic Artists and in 1933 was made a full member of the National Academy of Design. Arms died in Fairfield Connecticut in 1953. An impression of this work may be viewed in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. unknown
1829réf. 2994Mexico City: January 5 1829. Very good. Broadside 12 x 8.25 inches. Light wear center horizontal fold pinholes along left edge. A rare decree issued by Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil Governor of the Federal District attempting to regulate the disbursement and possession of guns in Mexico in 1829. Tornel notes that in recent times weapons belonging to the army have been "misplaced" around Mexico City. Collecting the weapons is "extremely urgent because the destiny of these weapons is to serve internal tranquility and the defense of the republic against external enemies." The order reserves the right of access to weapons for those "enlisted in the permanent active or local militia." Tornel authorizes the commanding general and local militia leaders to collect weapons held by civilians without a license to carry them. The bottom of the decree is signed in type by Tornel and his secretary. The presidential election of September 1 1828 saw Guerrero come in second. Two weeks later Santa Anna rose in support of Guerrero in Vera Cruz. In November of that year in Mexico City Guerrero supporters took control of the Acordada a former prison transformed into an armory and days of fighting broke out in the capital. These are no doubt the "recent events" referred to in the present decree that led to arms being scattered around the city. An interesting moment in the history of gun control in Mexico and a rare decree. OCLC reports just a single copy of this decree at the Bancroft Library. January 5 unknown books

1845réf. 1358841845. Rare printing of the 1845 annual report of the Commissioner of the General Land Office of the United States of America. Octavo disbound. Contains numerous folding maps and public surveys of Indiana Michigan Iowa Wisconsin Missouri Illinois Arkansas South Tennessee Southeastern Louisiana Alabama showing Chickasaw Cherokee and Creek Cessions and the State of Florida. In near fine condition. Rare. The first great expansion of the United States of America came with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 which doubled the country's territory although the southeastern border with Spanish Florida was the subject of much dispute until it and Spanish claims to the Oregon Country were ceded to the US in 1821. The annexation of the Republic of Texas in 1845 led directly to the Mexican–American War after which the victorious United States obtained the northern half of Mexico's territory including what was quickly made the state of California. However as the development of the country moved west the question of slavery became more important with vigorous debate over whether the new territories would allow slavery and events such as the Missouri Compromise and Bleeding Kansas. This came to a head in 1860 and 1861 when the governments of the southern states proclaimed their secession from the country and formed the Confederate States of America leading to the American Civil War. unknown

Two trial proofs of the first state exist however the regular first state was never published. Bottom margin very slightly trimmed still leaving full margins and an unobtrusive printing anomaly occurring as a fine line across the upper-right quadrant of the sheet otherwise in superb condition. 1927réf. 23311927. Very good. Etching on antique watermarked Arches laid Japon paper with a deckle edge 8 x 12 1/2 inches 204 x 318 mm; sheet 12 1/4 x 17 3/4 311 x 451 mm full margins. One of only three recorded trial proof impressions aside from the regular edition of 100 printed by Frederick Reynolds. Signed dated and inscribed "Trial Proof No 3" in pencil in the lower margin. Age tone and one area of light soft rust colored discoloration in the lower left image area. A magnificent impression. Fletcher 205. unknown
1933réf. 20421933. Excellent. Etching on cream laid paper with a deckle edge 12 5/8 x 8 11/16 322 x 222 mm; sheet 18 x 11 1/2 inches 457 x 291 mm full margins. Signed by both Arms and Eby in the lower right margin dated by Arms. In excellent condition with no visible defects. This plate was the work of both Arms and Eby: Arms doing the buildings Eby the figures and trees. It is for this reason the most problematic plate of either artist. According to Fletcher there were 6 states each of which was printed and reworked by both artists. Between the 5th and 6th state the plate was steeled desteeled rebitten and had additional work done by Eby and then refaced in steel. The 6th state edition resulted in 100 total impressions printed by Eby 50 for Eby 50 for Arms. Those for Eby were for distribution through Frederick Keppel & Co. and those for Arms for Kennedy & Co. After 62 pullings of the 5th state Eby stopped the edition; defaced the plate rebit the surface in the center of the plate particularly in the area of the figures resteeled the surface and finished the edition with 38 pullings. Since the plate was reworked this is considered an additional state bringing the total to 6. This impression appears to be one of the last state impressions from either the edition of 62 5th state impressions or the group 38 6th state impressions. In the lower right there appear the letters "sb" whether this lends a clue to this particular print's origin is something lost to history. Fletcher 270B.
