"The Eliot Arms or Square & Compass Square and Compass Tregadilett was once a Freemason’s Lodge for French prisoners of war on parole in Launceston: History supplied by R. F. Gilbert The original building was built in the 14th century and it became a coaching inn during 1625. The Inn fell into disarray in the early 19th century becoming a blacksmith’s shop until 1840 when it reverted back to a pub and the second name ‘Eliot Arms’ was added. The French POW’s lodge is thought to have existed for five to seven years of the war and this is shown by two certificates of ‘The Lodge Consulate Maconne’ dated 1762 and 1763; one in French and one in English issued to Robert Martin organist at St Mary Magdalene Church. Both certificates had French signatures five on the one of 1762 and four on the other dated 1763. Several of the Frenchmen joined the Dunheved Lodge which must have existed during 1756-1773. The Eliot is reputed to be haunted by a not unfriendly ghost which is said to have been seen by customers and staff in recent years. Mr T Richards landlord of the Eliot Arms Compass made an application to the Bench for an hours extension on the occasion of the Polyphant Cricket Club dinner given by Dr Serpell. The application was granted. ." from The Post and Weekly Feb 1911; Put in world history. Pictured 12/5/23 . 1920. The Eliot Arms Hotel unknown

1854réf. List3733Vandalia Springfield and Coles County Illinois 1854. Eight documents totaling about 75 pages 7 ¾ x 12 ½ inches and 7 ½ x 12 inches. Generally folded with toning at folds occasional small stains and minor damage to margins; one with more extensive repairs made with thread; entirely legible. Overall excellent. A collection of official documents from the Illinois auditor's and Coles County collector's offices recording mainly lists of properties in Coles County that had become subject to taxation with two recording properties owing back taxes and one recording tax delinquencies caused by assessment error. The lists of properties newly subject to taxation generally indicate the year in which the land was entered-that is when a settler had filed a claim with the federal land office registering intent to settle-and the year in which that land became subject to taxation. These lands were not immediately taxable as the settler first had to meet certain legal requirements such as living on and cultivating the land before the government would issue a patent transferring the title of the property from the federal government to the individual and thereby making them liable for taxes on it. The first Euro-American settlers had come to what would be Coles County in 1824 and it was set off from Clark County in 1830. That same year the Indian Removal Act passed Congress and the remaining Indigenous tribes in the region-many had already left following treaties earlier in the century-were pushed west of the Mississippi River. The federal government could then survey and map the land and open it to entry and patent by settlers like those represented in these tax rolls. The earliest dated entries recorded in these documents are from 1835 and were patented in 1841 though some entries likely occurred earlier as one document lists entries patented in 1838 but does not list entry date representing some of the earliest legal Euro-American settlements in the county. These documents thus record the incorporation of newly federally-owned "frontier" land into private ownership and into the county and state economy and implicitly the placement of previously tribally stewarded land into the hands of its first settlers. Also of interest in the documents are the signatories themselves. These include Albert Compton William Lee D. Ewing and Thomas Hayes Campbell prominent early Illinois political figures; but also Levi Davis a close friend of Abraham Lincoln's and James Shields one of Lincoln's best-known political rivals. Shields and Lincoln nearly fought a duel in 1842 after Lincoln criticized Shields' work as Illinois State Auditor-the same office in which Shields signed one of the Coles County tax rolls preserved here. Men like these occupied a layer of early Illinois society distinct from many of the settlers whose lands appear in the records: lawyers auditors legislators and political figures who linked frontier communities to the emerging institutions of state government. Coles County itself also held personal significance within Lincoln's world as the home of his father Thomas Lincoln and stepmother Sarah Bush Lincoln. Documents as follows: 1838: Lands newly subject to taxation in 1837 and 1838. 7 ¾ x 12 ½ inches. 22pp. Affixed with thread. Excellent. 1846: Properties for which back taxes for 1844 and 1845 were owed likely a continuation of the previous. 7 ¾ x 12 ½ inches. 4 pp. Slight stains and toning at folds. Excellent to Near Fine. March 25 1853: Lands newly subject to taxation in 1853. Signed by Thomas Hayes Campbell Springfield IL. 7 ½ x 12 inches. 18 pp plus docket. Affixed with thread. 1829réf. 2994Mexico City: January 5 1829. Very good. Broadside 12 x 8.25 inches. Light wear center horizontal fold pinholes along left edge. A rare decree issued by Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil Governor of the Federal District attempting to regulate the disbursement and possession of guns in Mexico in 1829. Tornel notes that in recent times weapons belonging to the army have been "misplaced" around Mexico City. Collecting the weapons is "extremely urgent because the destiny of these weapons is to serve internal tranquility and the defense of the republic against external enemies." The order reserves the right of access to weapons for those "enlisted in the permanent active or local militia." Tornel authorizes the commanding general and local militia leaders to collect weapons held by civilians without a license to carry them. The bottom of the decree is signed in type by Tornel and his secretary. The presidential election of September 1 1828 saw Guerrero come in second. Two weeks later Santa Anna rose in support of Guerrero in Vera Cruz. In November of that year in Mexico City Guerrero supporters took control of the Acordada a former prison transformed into an armory and days of fighting broke out in the capital. These are no doubt the "recent events" referred to in the present decree that led to arms being scattered around the city. An interesting moment in the history of gun control in Mexico and a rare decree. OCLC reports just a single copy of this decree at the Bancroft Library. January 5 unknown books
