1934réf. 15380New York: Coward-McCann Inc. Very Good. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket nice solid copy very light spotting to top edge otherwise very clean and firmly bound; gilt spine lettering a bit dulled but still easily readable in good light. Novel taking a hard look at the workings of a small-town public school system in the fictional "Nugget City" described in a contemporary review as "an industrial town in the South dominated wholly by big tobacco interests." In one of those amazing coincidences that seem to mark the lives of one-shot novelists the author was himself a school principal in Winston-Salem North Carolina. Go figure. According to the same review quoted above the author "describes a school system that is mean narrow and dogma-ridden the pawn of politics and wealth and a prey to all the reactionary forces in the community. He tells how the private lives of the teachers are regimented how they are criticized for the most trivial irregularity how radicalism among their number is ruthlessly stamped out. He stresses the difficulties of modernizing the curriculum. More daringly he shows that the industrial overlords of the town are opposed to any liberalizing form of instruction which might open the eyes of the workers' children and increase their discontent." Kinda makes you wonder how long Mr. Shields kept his job after the book came out doesn't it Hanna 3199. . Coward-McCann, Inc hardcover books

1829réf. 2994Mexico City: January 5 1829. Very good. Broadside 12 x 8.25 inches. Light wear center horizontal fold pinholes along left edge. A rare decree issued by Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil Governor of the Federal District attempting to regulate the disbursement and possession of guns in Mexico in 1829. Tornel notes that in recent times weapons belonging to the army have been "misplaced" around Mexico City. Collecting the weapons is "extremely urgent because the destiny of these weapons is to serve internal tranquility and the defense of the republic against external enemies." The order reserves the right of access to weapons for those "enlisted in the permanent active or local militia." Tornel authorizes the commanding general and local militia leaders to collect weapons held by civilians without a license to carry them. The bottom of the decree is signed in type by Tornel and his secretary. The presidential election of September 1 1828 saw Guerrero come in second. Two weeks later Santa Anna rose in support of Guerrero in Vera Cruz. In November of that year in Mexico City Guerrero supporters took control of the Acordada a former prison transformed into an armory and days of fighting broke out in the capital. These are no doubt the "recent events" referred to in the present decree that led to arms being scattered around the city. An interesting moment in the history of gun control in Mexico and a rare decree. OCLC reports just a single copy of this decree at the Bancroft Library. January 5 unknown books
