It is believed that they may have lived in the area for as long as 7000 years. They were primarily Mono and bordered on the north south and west by various Miwok tribes. They routinely traded with the Paiute tribe across the mountains to the east. European-American contact began after 1833. In 1850 a settler named James D. Savage set up a mining camp down below the valley and spent most of his time mining for gold and trading with the few other white men in the area. He took several Indian wives and developed influential relations with the nearby Native people. Later that year Savage's camp and post were attacked by the Ahwahnechee. Savage had moved into the Ahwahnechee land and effectively disrupted the lives of every Ahwahnechee. The Ahwahnechee raided his supplies and killed two of his men. This in turn sparked the Mariposa Indian War of 1850 to 1851." from Wikipedia; B&W Photographs; 132p. pages; Pictured 9/9/26; Signed by Author . 1928. Sunset Press hardcover

"One of the most challenging problems arose recently during the reconstruction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The reconstruction was done to enable the bridge to handle its ever increasing automobile traffic. Due to the geographical location of the City of San Francisco its main ingress except from the south is over two large bridges. One of these transbay bridges is a structure six miles in length connecting the City of San Francisco with that of Oakland across the Bay. The westerly half of the crossing is composed of twin suspension bridges with main spans of 2310 feet between San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island. Its easterly half consists of a 1400 foot cantilever span followed by a series of long steel truss spans from the Island to Oakland. From the time the Bridge opened in 1937 traffic has increased from a daily average of 25000 vehicles to over 100000 today." from Reconstruction-West Approaches San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge by Norman C. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the title page. The book contains a series of newspaper articles regarding the unincorporated town of New Idria and about the mercury mine that was the basis for the town and covers the town from birth to death. "The community was established to support the mine which mainly extracted mercury since cinnabar was abundant in the local rock formations. Mercury mining at the location began in 1854. At one time the New Idria mines were America's second most productive mines with the New Almaden mines in the vicinity of San Jose about 82 miles 132 km northwest being the first. The discovery of mercury ore at New Idria came soon after the discovery of gold in the Sierra foothills which began the California gold rush. At that time mercury was important in extracting gold from gold ore. Before the New Idria and New Almaden Quicksilver Mines the mercury came almost exclusively from Europe." from Wikipedia; 138p. pages; Pictured 3/28/26 . 2008. Three Rocks Research unknown

1898réf. 2507020Hartford: Hartford Pub Co 1898. Hardcover. Fair. 24mo - over 5 - 5¾" tall. 1st edition. A 1913 library binding in cloth. 558pp. Illustrated with sharp and remarkably descriptive b/w photos taken by the author or an associate. The binding is tight even though the binding is just barely exposed after the title page. The binding threads are not broken. Library stamp on front paste down and under it "with drawn" in pencil. A check out pocket was removed from rear paste down leaving some residue. A binder's ink stamp is on lower free end paper with the date of "May 1913." No spine call numbers. No stamps on the edges. Top edge shows a tideline but there virtually no staining to pages. Some pages have a spot or two of foxing or mild stain. The tight binding probably warrants a "good" grade but I prefer to be conservative and have assigned it "fair." If buyer is willing to spend a little money an attractive rebinding would make this copy a star. Not uncommon as to libraries where this may be found but certainly very very scarce on the market. I read this book aloud to my wife and it is really a "good read." It is thrilling. Hartford Pub Co hardcover
1900réf. 2507019n.p.: n.p. 1900. Original. Hardcover. Fine. FABULOUS but unidentified photo of frontier haying we presume camp. 7 3/16" x 9 ¾" b/w photo mounted on black 9" x 11 x ¾" mat. This is a remarkably descriptive and sharp photo of either a group of men and women gathered in front of what appears to be a traveling cook house with some sitting on a wagon. In the doorway of the cookhouse are two women well-dressed for the photo wearing caps. Among the group of 25 boys men and one young girl is third from the left the gentleman who we presume is probably the owner / manager / boss / ramrod. Is he checking up on the progress of what is going on The man third from right appears to be African-American. The girl in the photo also wearing a woman's work cap sits on the shoulders of a couple of guys. The apparel in this photo includes overalls trousers with suspenders wide-brimmed hats and jackets. They all appear to have clean faces so maybe they are washed up for dinner The romantic historian in me wants to know who they are where they are and what they have been doing. The landscape in the distance appears to show a field with a harvest cut line running across it. It is hard to say if the objects in the mid-distance on the right are hay shocks. A treasure if you can handle the mystery. Near fine condition. Photo to be uploaded or upon request. n.p. hardcover

BUT THIS IS A "BINDING COPY" WITH THREE PRELIM LEAVES MISSING BOARDS DETACHED NEEDS REBINDING AND RESTORATION WORK IF BUYER WANTS TO RESTORE IT: PLEASE READ DETAILS AT END OF THIS LISTING. Here is what William Reese Six Score #83 said of it in his bibliography of 150 best ranching books: "These atlases were designed so that pages could be tipped in. I doubt that any two copies are exactly alike. Pagination through page 340 this copy 339 with verso blank although there are many unnumbered pages of views. There are over 300 colored maps views depicting over 350 scenes and as many as 25 folding tissue maps interleave as well as unpaginated text. 44.5 x 38 cm." 15" x 18". Reese continues: "This massive compilation contains a vast wealth of information on Kansas at the time of publication. Many of the views depict stock ranches which are also located on the extremely detailed maps. There are many bird's-eye views of towns and sights. Much of the accompanying text is devoted to listing the leading citizens of the state their property what kind of livestock they raise and even what kind of fencing they use. The Everts' atlas is an important source for much information with illustrations existing nowhere else. A similar atlas was issued for Nebraska by the same firm. The numerous state and county atlases of the late nineteenth century usually sold by subscription often contain the best illustrations and maps available." I have collated this copy and matched against my very good copy presently offered for sale. There are theoretically 339 maps some fine thin paper foldout maps some on one page and some multiple to a page. Five numbered maps are "missing" but were not even indexed. My vg copy has the same except it has four "missing" same four! So with one exception this is a qualified "all maps present." Now the BAD NEWS accounting for the low price I am offering this copy for: Original boards present but detached. Spine gone. Three preliminary leaves missing namely: Preface Table of Populations Contents Index to Counties and Towns First 2 of 3 pages listing Illustrations. HOWEVER FROM MY GOOD COPY I WILL MAKE FINE JPEG PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE THREE MISSING LEAVES 6 pps that may will be sent to the buyer as digital files and can be printed off or simply referred to on a computer. 1787réf. 5031London: Charles Eyre & Andrew Strahan 1787. First edition. 27 George III Chapter 44. A Fine copy measuring 310 x 190mm and collating complete: 2 987-988. A scarce and important piece of legal history which ESTC records at only one library Lincoln's Inn and which does not appear in the modern auction record. The present is the only example on the market. At the start of the Restoration "English church courts were revived by an act of Parliament on 27 July 1661 to resume their traditional task of correcting spiritual and moral misdemeanors. Soon thereafter parishioners across England's dioceses once more faced admonition fines excommunication and even imprisonment if they failed to conform to the laws of the restored Church of England" Aklund. As much as these courts sought to reestablish a monolithic Anglican communal identity during Charles II's reign their position in the 18th century became "a case study in the secularization of the legal system" particularly given their theoretical justification based in the problematic concept of divine right Harris. Numerous acts the present example among them "represented an important step in the direction of limiting the reach of of ecclesiastical jurisdiction" Harris. An Act to Prevent Frivolous and Vexatious Suits in Ecclesiastical Courts was passed in 1787 drawn from a bill presented in Parliament the previous year. Its major accomplishment was the removal of Church authority in the regulation of private sexual behaviors: "It shall be further enacted by the Authority aforesaid That no Suit shall be commenced in any Ecclesiastical Court for Fornication or Incontinence of for any striking or brawling." While the Church may have voiced its moral codes or enacted social shaming within its own communities it no longer had the legal authority to regulate or punish sexual behavior. Such secularization had significant benefits across a number of communities. For survivors of assault it ended the Church's ability to mandate that a woman marry her attacker; for queer communities it prevented Biblically based persecution; for sex workers it took away the risk of arrest or fines for conducting their livelihoods. Ultimately the jurisdiction of ecclesiastical courts over sexual behavior whether in the form of obscene or defamatory words sexual engagement and sensual pleasure was terminated by this act. Little to no legal regulation of sex would be enacted until the next century when the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act and a series of Contagious Diseases Acts would seek to give secular courts more control over individuals' bodies.
