1934réf. SHEL1755NY: G. P. Putnam's Sons 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Poor. 1st printing. Cloth. 276pp. Illus. Endpaper maps. Custom bookplate from library of William D. Waltman. From Wiki: "In the early 1920s Richard Marsh was sent by Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone to look for suitable rubber lands. He unsuccessfully explored the region between the Canal and Costa Rica as the land was irregular for large-scale rubber growing. In consequence he explored the Darien region that remained unexplored in that years. Marsh sought some "white-Indians" in the region and come back to the United States to organize a scientific expedition in the Darien." A scarce book now. This a rather poor copy fraying at head/toe of spine edge fading front hinge broken after half-title rear fly missing. Bookplate on front paste down covers part of map but rear paste down and fly leaf has same map. This title probably belongs in a Bigfoot / Sasquatch library as it has an account p.20ff the sighting of a large bipedal hominoid near Pinas Bay. Only a couple of pages of info but quite interesting. Certainly an adequate reading copy. G. P. Putnam's Sons hardcover

On pages 256-258 Ives' grandfather appears -- Adlai E. Stevenson I U.S. vice president under Cleveland -- and alongside the text Ives has made a few pencil rules. Elizabeth "Buffie" Stevenson Ives 1898-1994 was the sole sibling of the governor and was involved in his first presidential bid at the time. Quite an unusual copy. The Bobbs-Merrill Company hardcover

Folio 10 1/4" x 13 7/8" subtly but beautifullly decorated wraps. 32pp. Glossy stock. 12 b/w images image size 8 1/4" x 11 5/8" by Atkeson with titles by Manly. This are snowy winter photos taken in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Atkeson 1907-1990 was one of the finest landscape photographers of the Pacific Northwest and he was widely honored especially in his home of Oregon. Many of his books were elegantly published by Northwest Graphic Arts Center. The photographs in this volume are so finely dotted half-tones that they almost look like as nice as photogravures. Of the twelve images one has a 4 1/2" hairline crease running to the edge of the sheet in the lower corner and this is the only reason we grade this copy down to near fine. A rare and desirable item by a master landscape photographer. This book found in only five libraries four in Oregon and the fifth at Yale. Privately Printed & West Coast Printing & Binding unknown

We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. 1987208 pages including footnotes and black and white photographs. Backbreaking work for slave wages in labour camps - that was the government's response to thousands of young men looking for jobs in the Dirty Thirties. This historical account tells the little-known story of the jobless who drifted across the country during the Depression and were drawn into the work camps - offered poor food, mass shelter, and a few pennies a day in exchange for doney work on major government projects. Records the desperation, disillusionment, and rebellion of these welfare inmates, and the repressive shameful way in which the politicians and government authorities tried to keep the situation under control. Clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear. Excellent copy. Book

Bruce and Jean Ariss accompanied Ricketts and Steinbeck on an excursion to Mexico to collect marine specimens. His account of the trip including numerous sketches were published in his 1988 book Inside Cannery Row: Sketches from the Steinbeck Era Lexikos which offers a rare insight into the obstinate but charming Steinbeck who himself wrote of one such journey in the book The Log from the Sea of Cortez.
