1954réf. 153459Cherry Hills Village Colorado 1954. Exceptionally rare original golf scorecard from the Cherry Hills Country Club outside Denver dated October 7 1954 signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon from a round the two men shared during Eisenhower’s first term. The card preserves the hole-by-hole scores of the four players each in his own column and is signed at the foot by Nixon as the player attested by A.G. Rydstrom and signed in full by Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon formed one of the most consequential partnerships in American political history. Eisenhower 1890-1969 the Supreme Allied Commander who directed the Normandy invasion and the defeat of Nazi Germany was elected the thirty-fourth president in 1952 and chose the young California senator Richard Nixon as his running mate joining the most admired soldier of his generation to an ambitious thirty-nine-year-old anti-communist crusader. Across two terms they presided over a decade of postwar prosperity the building of the interstate highway system the end of the Korean War and the tense early years of the Cold War. Nixon 1913-1994 as vice president took on an unusually active role traveling the world as the administration’s emissary and standing in during the president’s illnesses among them the heart attack Eisenhower suffered in 1955 the year after this round was played. He would lose the presidency to John F. Kennedy by a hair in 1960 win it in 1968 open relations with China and resign in the wake of Watergate in 1974 the only president ever to do so. For Eisenhower golf was a passion that shaped his presidency as much as any policy. He played more than eight hundred rounds while in office had a putting green installed on the White House South Lawn and did more than any other figure to popularize the game in postwar America. A scorecard carrying the signatures of both men from a round they played together at the height of the Eisenhower era unites two presidents on a single sheet in the pastime the president loved above all others. Handsomely double matted in green suede with an engraved brass plaque and archivally framed. In fine condition the scorecard toned with light handling folds. The round recorded on this card was played at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village Colorado on October 7 1954 a course Eisenhower favored during his frequent Colorado golf retreats and the site of several United States Opens. Joining the President and Vice President were the club’s professional Rip Arnold and A.A. Rydstrom. Ralph “Rip” Arnold was the longtime head professional at Cherry Hills and one of Eisenhower’s regular playing partners and informal instructors during the president’s many visits to Colorado where his wife Mamie had deep family roots in Denver. The brass plaque beneath the card names all four participants President Dwight D. Eisenhower Vice President Richard M. Nixon professional golfer Rip Arnold and Mr. A.A. Rydstrom while the card itself lists each of them hole by hole in his own column a modest and human record of an afternoon shared on the course and kept exactly as it was scored. unknown

réf. 190685Norwalk Connecticut Easton Press 1988. The 38th President's copy of the 37th President's memoirs First Easton Press edition signed as issued with a superb provenance: the copy of Nixon's successor as President Gerald Ford with his bookplate on the front pastedown. It is no exaggeration to say that each was the most important man in the other's life - Nixon appointing Ford as Vice President resulted in Ford becoming President and Ford's pardoning of Nixon saved him from an ignominious trial and potential prison term. Their relationship was of profound consequence in American history. Nixon's memoirs charts his life from his childhood to his leaving the White House and defends his presidency and his actions in Watergate. Ford plays a central role throughout the book. The pair were friends from early in their political careers. This combined with Ford's bipartisan support in Congress led to Nixon choosing him as Vice President and consequently placing him in the White House upon his resignation. Ford's pardon of Nixon may have ended "the long national nightmare" but also tanked Ford's own popularity and led to his defeat in the 1976 presidential election. Repeatedly in his memoirs Nixon commends Ford's loyalty character and ability. Octavo. Original blue bonded leather spine lettered in gilt patterned endpapers gilt edges. Housed in a blue quarter morocco box by the Chelsea Bindery. Two publisher's prospectuses loosely inserted. Slight rubbing to spine else a fine copy. hardcover
réf. 190684New York: Simon and Schuster 1990. Inscribed to the man he made President First edition an unequalled presentation copy inscribed by President Nixon to President Ford: "To Jerry Ford - a courageous battler in the arena - with warm regards from Dick Nixon 11-11-90" and signed by Ford underneath. It is no exaggeration to say that each was the most important man in the other's life - Nixon appointing Ford as Vice President resulted in Ford becoming President and Ford's pardoning of Nixon saved him from an ignominious trial and potential prison term. Their relationship was of profound consequence in American history. Nixon's choice of Vice President following Spiro Agnew's resignation in October 1973 needed confirmation by both Houses of Congress then controlled by Democrats. His need to choose a candidate who could attract bipartisan support resulted in Nixon appointing Ford a moderate Republican and House Minority Leader popular with both Houses and good friends with Nixon. Partly this choice can be attributed to the expectation that Ford would be quickly and decisively confirmed amid the escalating Watergate scandal as indeed happened. Nixon's resignation in August 1974 ensured Ford took the presidency - the only office holder to have not been elected to President or Vice President. It is generally accepted that Ford was unlikely to have otherwise ran for and won a popular presidential election. In the Arena is Nixon's account of his resignation pardon and the aftermath: "the most personal profound and revealing memoir ever written by a major political figure" jacket. Nixon recounts how after resigning the presidency he and his friends were being hounded that he was facing bankruptcy from legal fees if sent to trial and his reputation was trashed. Ford's pardon was his lifeline yet he knew it would hurt Ford politically. Consequently "Next to the resignation accepting the pardon was the most painful decision of my political career" p. 21. Ford's polling plummeted as a result of the pardon and his sacrifice may have cost him the 1976 presidential election. It is surely this to which Nixon refers when he inscribes to Ford as a "courageous battler in the arena". Octavo. Original blue quarter cloth spine lettered in gilt blue paper-covered sides red endpapers. With dust jacket. Housed in a blue quarter morocco box by the Chelsea Bindery. Unclipped jacket a little rubbed at extremities slight paperclip impression to front panel: a fine copy in near-fine jacket. hardcover

réf. 190510New York: Warner Books 1982. First edition first printing presentation copy inscribed by the 37th President on the half-title "To Charlton Heston - from one of his fans - Richard Nixon 1982". This is a fine association copy - aside from Heston's role as perhaps the greatest American actor of the early post-war decades whom Nixon clearly admired Heston was a prominent supporter of Nixon's presidential bid in 1972. In the 1950s Heston had endorsed liberal Democratic candidates in the 1960s more centrist Democrats and finally in the 1970s switched to the Republicans. In the 1972 election he starred in a lengthy campaign video explaining how Nixon had secured his political switch. During Nixon's presidency Heston served on the National Council on the Arts and as a cultural diplomat for the State Department. Into the 1980s Heston was a leading conservative figure active in the National Rifle Association famously challenging gun control advocates to take his rifle "from my cold dead hands" and campaigning against affirmative action and other culture war issues. Leaders offers a detailed examination of the relationship between Nixon and various foreign leaders whom he met throughout his lifetime. The book met with critical praise aiding the rehabilitation of his political image following his resignation of the presidency in 1974. Octavo. Original black quarter cloth spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Hinges a little tender rear free endpaper creased; unclipped jacket with light creasing and tiny nicks at extremities: a very good copy in very good jacket. hardcover
1993réf. 151891January 9 1993. Rare original card celebrating President Richard Nixon's 80th birthday. A card depicting him with his four grandchildren at Woodcliff Lake in New Jersey: Melanie Eisenhower Christopher Cox Jennie Eisenhower and Alex Eisenhower. Boldly signed by Richard Nixon to the bottom right in black felt tip. In fine condition. The piece measures 7 inches by 5 inches. Richard Milhous Nixon 1913–1994 the thirty-seventh President of the United States remains one of the most complex and consequential figures in modern American political history — a man of formidable intellect and strategic vision whose presidency produced genuine achievements of the first order alongside one of the most catastrophic failures of political judgment the office has ever witnessed. Born in Yorba Linda California and educated at Whittier College and Duke University School of Law Nixon served as a Naval officer in the Pacific rose through the House and Senate on the strength of his aggressive anti-communist credentials and served two terms as Eisenhower's Vice President before losing narrowly to Kennedy in 1960 and engineering one of the most remarkable political comebacks in American history with his election to the presidency in 1968. His foreign policy record was substantial — the opening of China détente with the Soviet Union the withdrawal from Vietnam and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency among his lasting contributions — but everything was ultimately consumed by Watergate the cover-up of a burglary at Democratic National Committee headquarters that led to his resignation on August 9 1974 the only presidential resignation in American history. Pardoned by Gerald Ford Nixon spent his final two decades writing prolifically on foreign policy and partially rehabilitating his public standing. He died in April 1994 at the age of eighty-one and his funeral was attended by all five living former presidents — a gesture of institutional respect for a man whose gifts and flaws were each in their different ways outsized. unknown

réf. 151893Rare original inauguration invitation for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon. Octavo finely printed inauguration invitation on cardstock with tissue-guarded black and white portraits of Eisenhower and Nixon signed in facsimile. In fine condition. The piece measures 6.5 inches by 10 inches. The political partnership of Dwight David Eisenhower and Richard Milhous Nixon spanning two terms in the White House from 1953 to 1961 was one of the most consequential and privately complicated vice presidential relationships in the history of the American executive uniting the most celebrated military commander of the Second World War with one of the most ambitious and tactically gifted politicians of the postwar generation. Eisenhower the five-star Supreme Allied Commander who had overseen the liberation of Western Europe before serving as NATO's first Supreme Commander selected the thirty-nine-year-old California Senator as his running mate in 1952 partly to balance the ticket generationally and geographically and partly for Nixon's aggressive anti-communist credentials — an asset in the early years of the Cold War that Eisenhower above partisan controversy in a way few politicians ever achieve found useful to have at arm's length. The relationship between the two men was never personally warm: Eisenhower's famous hesitation when asked in 1960 to name a major idea of Nixon's that he had adopted his reply that if given a week he might think of one was damaging enough to Nixon's presidential campaign that it became one of the more celebrated gaffes in modern American political history and reflected a genuine ambivalence about his Vice President that Nixon felt deeply. Yet Eisenhower was also the president who stood by Nixon during the 1952 Checkers speech crisis when Nixon's political survival hung on a televised address responding to allegations of a secret political fund and who deployed Nixon extensively as a diplomatic emissary and political surrogate across eight years — sending him to confront Nikita Khrushchev in the famous Kitchen Debate of 1959 and to represent the administration in fifty-four countries. The Eisenhower years gave Nixon the foreign policy credibility and national profile that eventually carried him to the presidency and whatever its personal limitations the partnership produced one of the most stable and prosperous decades in modern American history. unknown

Although miles away she could see that ""the East End were getting it. we could see the miniature silver planes circling round the target area in such perfect formation that they looked like a children's toy model of flying boats or chair-o-planes at a fair .
