1901réf. 41698Nome: The Nome News 1901. 1901. ALASKA CRIME. First edition. 15" x 22" newsprint 4 pp. printed in six columns. The newspaper is printed semi-weekly and this issue is dated August 17 1901. This newspaper is quite content-rich compared to most small papers of the era with considerable space devoted to original local news content. Problems of violence and frontier justice dominate this issue. A large headline on the front page blares "A Murderous Knife Wielded" and describes a fight over a woman in which one man's head was nearly severed. Another lengthy story reports that a gang of 65 masked men attacked a camp on Glacier Creek at three o'clock in the morning--leading to thirteen arrests and one man hospitalized with a gunshot would--all the result of a disputed mining claim the history of the dispute is recounted in the article. A separate editorial reacts to these events with a call for martial law at the camp concluding "A man may kill another in the heat of passion for principle and be justified but the man who deliberately plans to jeopardize life for gold over which there is a clouded title is a murder to all intents and purposes and deserves the fate of a murderer." Another article reports that Judge James Wickersham spent a day in Nome on his way to Unalaska where he will preside over two murder trials and that he is concerned about finding enough competent jurors. And yet another reports that 54 members of the Nome Bar Association have sent a signed petition to President McKinley requesting that he remove District Judge Arthur H. Noyes on the grounds that he "is vacillating and dilatory weak and partial negligent careless and absolutely incompetent" and that "the interposition of a fearless honest and competent judge is urgently required at Nome to prevent further riot and bloodshed to preserve law and order and to protect life liberty and property." The story of yet another murder also gold-related appears on the paper's last page where we also find the usual classified and display advertising. Several creases from folding and a small area of loss at the center shaped like a small triangle that affects all pages and measures 1/2" x 1/2" x 1." Good clean copy. The Nome News, 1901. unknown

réf. 1710710 Hohenzollern Strasse W. Berlin Prussia . 16 July 1874. 6pp. 12mo. Bifolium and single leaf. On aged and worn paper with 4 cm closed tear to all three leaves. A highly interesting letter illuminating Victorian Fleet Street and City of London practices. The author's signature is frustratingly illegible but may well be that of sports journalist Charles William Alcock 1842-1907. The recipient is possibly James Clarke d.1888 editor of The Christian World. The author opens the letter with the 'conclusions' he has arrived at regarding the 'various schemes' which he 'maturely reflected upon' in a discussion with Clarke the previous week. The 'most advisable' option would be to start 'the heavy paper' but this can only be done 'if the whole of the money can be got together in time to enable us to begin October 1st or Novbr. 1st.' On the other hand if 'capitalists should be less eager to join than we wish there will remain the alternative of either establishing a weekly paper on Baron Reuter's plan or of trying the experiment of a small daily paper as proposed by myself at the last meeting.' He discusses the merits of the weekly paper with which 'as we may expect to fill it with news not previously published we shall soon command attention and influence'. He prefers the option of 'the small daily paper' which would be 'only as large or a little larger than The Echo and coming out four or five times a day contain nothing but the most important intelligence in a condensed yet perfectly complete and appreciable form. In addition to Reuter's telegrams we should have daily a considerable amount of private & exclusive intelligence on political & commercial topics.' He continues to describe the advantages of the 'small daily paper' which should appeal to 'the merchant as well as the statesman' and would 'appear all the more attractive for our brevity and telling style. A compact & readable summary of all that is really remarkable in Parliament and in fact anywhere else shd. of course be included in the programme.' He continues: 'Relying partly on the Baron's i.e. Reuter's promised contributions and partly on what private & exclusive intelligence I have at my disposal I will engage to start such a paper with a capital of £50000.' He considers that 'the exclusive nature of a considerable portion of the contents and the novel style of the whole thing will justify us in making it a penny paper even though imitating the style of the halfpenny Echo'. If five 'Capitalists' could be found at £10000 each 'active preparations might be set on foot at once'. One has already been found 'Mr. Duddell of 7 Poultry and Queen's Park Brighton' i.e. George Duddell 1821-1887 who had made a fortune as a merchant and opium monopolist in Hong Kong. The author's friend 'Mr. Davies i.e. Henry Daniel Davies 110 Cannon Street and Spring Grove House Isleworth Middlesex' might 'likewise swell our funds' and the author is 'in hopes of getting something' in Berlin. He concludes in thanking Clarke for his support. 'If the paper is destined to become a reality it cannot but gain credit by vindicating the objects in promoting which you have justly acquired so great and universal a reputation.' réf. 66165March/April 1978. Original magazine 27.5 x 21 cm. pp.471. Publisher's original pictorial wrappers showing His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman. Coloured illustrations to covers and endapers black & white illustrations in the text. Old stamp in Arabic dated 1978 to front cover and first leaf. Spine worn generally very good. The magazine's 1978 focus on the Sultanate came during a highly transformative period for the country under the early reign of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Key developments driving Omani oil news in 1978 included: The Dhofar Exploration Boom: Following the resolution of regional instability in southern Oman the late 1970s marked an aggressive expansion of exploration. This led to the rapid development of the crucial Marmul Birba and Qaharir oilfields adding 70000 barrels per day to national output. Nationalisation & Control: By 1978 the Omani government had successfully solidified its 60% majority ownership stake in Petroleum Development Oman PDO partnering with foreign entities like Shell 34% Total 4% and Partex 2%. Financing the "Omani Renaissance": The year 1978 sat squarely within the decade where modern crude oil revenues—which began commercial export in 1967—were actively funneled into building Oman's first national infrastructure roads public schools hospitals and telecommunications. Geological Challenges: Media coverage at the time heavily tracked Oman's unique highly complex geological structures. Unlike its neighbours Oman's oil fields required cutting-edge expensive secondary recovery techniques and enhanced oil recovery EOR technologies to maintain profitable extraction levels. "Arab Oil: The International News Magazine for the Oil Industry" launched in January 1978. March/April 1978. unknown
