1920réf. BK0142New York: King Features Syndicate Inc 1920. Original gelatin silver press photograph of dancer and Ziegfeld performer Muriel Stryker seated cross-legged in theatrical costume with her exposed skin coated in metallic bronze paint. K. Del & Herbert News Photos credit to verso with original typed caption "USES ENOUGH PAINT ON HER BODY TO COVER THE STATUE OF LIBERTY." King Features Syndicate ownership stamp and editorial annotations. 5 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches. Very good. A publicity photograph of Muriel Stryker a featured Broadway dancer who appeared in several of Florenz Ziegfeld's productions during the early 1920s shown in the unusual body-painted performance persona that earned her the sobriquet "The Bronze Boy." Stryker appeared in the Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic of 1921 and subsequently in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1922 and Ziegfeld Follies of 1923. She had already attracted attention in the 1921 musical Sun-kist where she was billed as "The Indian Idol" and later appeared as Virginia Ravenel in The Magnolia Lady in 1924. The photograph shows Stryker in one of her "spectacular dance poses" her body metallically painted and framed by a theatrical headpiece. The attached press caption claims that Stryker "coats her body twice daily with a special bronze paint"-using enough over the course of her career "to cover the Statue of Liberty"-and adding that each application cost management $45. Stryker belonged to a generation of performers whose careers depended heavily upon photographic circulation as well as live performance. Her image appeared in illustrated theatrical publications and a separate group of photographs of her survives in the Flo Ziegfeld-Billie Burke papers at the New York Public Library. The present photograph distributed by K. Del & Herbert News Photos and later retained by King Features Syndicate shows how such stage identities were translated into national press imagery. .
