Papers from the Second International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium. The designation of Istanbul by the European Union's Council of Ministers as the European Capital of Culture for 2010 was instrumental in the decision to focus on Constantinople in the Second International Sevgi Gonul Byzantine Studies Symposium, which was held on 21-23 June 2010 at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. The particular theme of the symposium, "The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture," was selected, on the other hand, in view of Constantinople's essential role as Byzantine imperial capital soon after its foundation by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great on 11 May 330. The aim of the symposium was to evaluate, from administrative, political, social, economic, and religious perspectives, the impact of the political power that spread out from the Great Palace and, as of the twelfth century, from the Blachernai Palace to the rest of the empire, and to investigate the reflections of this power in the cultural sphere. Presented in this volume are thirty out of the forty papers delivered at the Second International Sevgi Gonul Byzantine Studies Symposium. The papers have been grouped under the following four section headings: "Byzantine Palace Architecture," "The Byzantine Court as the Center of Imperial Power," "Ceremonies at the Court and in the City," and "Court Culture and Visual Arts.".

2018New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. 113 p., b/w ills. Smintheion Studies I: The Roman baths and related structures. This project was carried out with permission from the Turkish Ministry of Culture under the auspices of the Department of Antiquities and Museums. Especially important was the support of Coskun Ozgunel, the director of excavations at Smintheion (Sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus) since 1980, who allowed me to excavate at the site. After I became a member of the archaeological team in 2003, I began to specialize on the Roman use of the sanctuary by placing special emphasis on the Roman Baths and other water-related buildings that were important for the operation of the sanctuary. My first work was to excavate the water distribution/storage/settling basins located to the west of the temple of Apollo Smintheus in the course of the 2006 and 2007 field seasons. Then, I excavated Large Baths between 2008 and 2013 and determined that ali the water distribution basins supplied Large Baths with water from the sacred spring next to the temple. My last work was to excavate Small Baths, located about 50 meter north of the temple between 2014 and 2017. This structure was partially dug in the l 970s as part of a rescue excavation by Çanakkale Archaeology Museum as it was a Roman villa. I re-excavated the structure and established that this was the second major Roman bath built in the sanctuary. With the excavations of these two Roman baths at Smintheion, I wanted to contribute to our general knowledge on the function of the 'sanctuary baths' and the monumentalization of the Greek sanctuaries during the Roman era. I am hoping that these works will shed new light on those studies dealing with the use of the Hellenic sanctuaries during the Roman era. Coskun Özgünel, my tutor and advisor throughout my Ph.D. course at Ankara University, also provided support during the years of excavation at the sanctuary. My experience working alongside him during excavations of a Roman bath at Salamis on Cyprus was an important reason for me to work on the Roman baths of Smintheion. His lovely wife Nese Ozgünel has become a mentor for me throughout my stay at Smintheion. Special thanks are due to my colleagues Turan Takaoglu, Erhan Oztepe, Tolga Ozhan, Tayyar Gürdal, and Oguz Koçyigit for sharing their thoughts on the finds recovered from the excavations of the Roman baths at the sanctuary. In addition, my warm thanks are due to Fikret K. Yegül who kindly shared his insights on the finds with me during his visit to the sanctuary in 2016. I am also deeply grateful to him for honoring me by contributing to this work with an introduction highlighting the importance of the Roman baths at the sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus. Davut Kaplan.

2022New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 183 p., color and b/w ills. Setting forth concepts related to weighing and measuring meant developing both practical and philosophical links with the world. When ancient civilizations used seeds produced in the fertile soils of Mesopotamia to establish the first units of weight, the observations they made in relation to the act of measuring created a springboard for civilizations to thrive. The 2nd millennium BC saw the frontiers of discovery advancing along the trade routes between Mesopotamia and Anatolia. While the fascination with precision in weighing and measuring continued, there was a corresponding migration of myths from the realms of the gods to the land of mortals, and concepts like truth and justice became associated with the balancing of the suspended pans of weighing scales. In ancient Egypt the sins of the deceased were weighed on a set of scales, while in ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the weighing scale was a symbol of justice and an indispensable illustrative element in the depiction of gods and goddesses. In Byzantine society, too, the act of just and accurate weighing resonated deeply with ethical sensibilities and recalled the weighing of souls. And in the Ottoman Empire, precise weighing represented the foundations of trust, not only in trade but also just as notably in religious life. "Man is the measure of all things: of the things that are, that they are, of the things that are not, that they are not," proclaimed Protagoras. The endeavor to measure the world with a handful of units brought forth the capacity to recreate it in the abstract. As the measurement of discovery became the substance of myths, weighing and measuring, beyond being mere physical actions, became an important means of self-expression to those captivated by the universe and what lay beyond the boundaries of knowledge. With a selection of objects from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection, The Art of Weights and Measures aims to explore, through the eyes of civilizations, gods, merchants, master craftsmen, and their apprentices from the 2nd millennium BC to the present day, how weights and measures have shaped economies, cultures, and intercultural relations, their impact on social dynamics of trust, and their journey towards becoming standardized units.

2015New English Original bdg. hc. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English and Turkish. [xiv], 213 p., color ills. Yenikapi shipwrecks. Vol. 2: Woods of Yenikapi shipwrecks.= Yenikapi batiklari. Cilt 2: Yenikapi batiklarinin ahsaplari. Salvage excavations conducted at Yenikapi within the frame of Marmaray and Metro projects brought to light the Theodosian Harbour and rare archaeological remains. The new finds that extended Istanbul's history to 8000 BP include an assembly of 37 shipwrecks dated to the fifth through eleventh centuries AD. This book deals with the genus-species identifications of 27 shipwrecks unearthed by Istanbul Archaeological Museums Directorate and processed by the Division of Conservation of Marine Archaeological Objects, Faculty of Letters, Istanbul University. More than 3000 samples were analysed by Prof. Dr. Ünal Akkemik of Istanbul University's Faculty of Forestry. All the shipwrecks uncovered belong to the Byzantine period; however, those of the fifth-seventh centuries were built with coniferous trees like cypress and pine whereas those of the ninth-eleventh centuries were built with broad-leaved trees like oak and chestnut. Ships of the seventh-ninth centuries, on the other hand, reflect a mixture of both tree groups. In overall, the wood identifications indicate a change from the coniferous trees to broad-leaved trees in the time span of fifth to eleventh centuries. Study of the 27 wrecks has not only cast light onto the shipbuilding techniques of the Byzantine period but also produced an invaluable database revealing the change in woods used.
